Rider’s 34th Annual Athletics Golf Gala to benefit its D-I varsity programs

LAWRENCE, N.J. – For the 16th consecutive year, Rider University’s 34th Annual Athletics Golf Gala will be held at Old York Country Club in Chesterfield, Monday, and will benefit Rider’s 20 NCAA Division I varsity programs.

In 1985, the Golf Gala originated at Rider as a means to increase support for the University’s athletics, its programs, and most importantly, its student athletes, according to a statement from Don Harnum, Rider University athletic director.

Harnum also wrote that, “since the Gala’s inception, many improvements have been made in the areas of information technology, facilities, equipment, team travel, uniforms, team rooms and more.”

On Monday, golfers will have choices between two shotgun start times at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The golf fee will include Rider or Adidas sportswear and other participant gifts, greens and cart fees, souvenir foursome photos, refreshments on the course, breakfast or lunch in the morning, and lunch or dinner in the afternoon.

After the golf session, there will be a cocktail hour, dinner, awards ceremony, raffle prize giveaway, and the annual silent auction.

This year, Rider Athletics Golf Gala will offer a discounted rate for Broncs of the Last Decade (BOLD) alumni, which will include all the participants’ gifts, breakfast and lunch in the morning session only.

BOLD alumni may register and play in the afternoon, but will be charged the full registration fee.

LAWRENCE, N.J. — Along with local students and youth organizations, seven13 Films will stage a youth symposium with Trenton mayoral candidates, which will be moderated by CBS-3 Eyewitness News reporter, Alicia Nieves, at Rider University tomorrow evening.

The symposium will feature today’s youth from local schools and organizations, who will ask the panel of mayoral candidates questions about how they would improve the social challenges of Trenton. The candidates will have limited time to answer each question.

Prior to the youth symposium, seven13 Films will be screening an episode of their docuseries, and the Rider University students will be screening their featurette respectively: Generation Change and Generation Change: It Starts with Us.

“It is amazing to see the film we have created has brought together the world of politics and education all in one place,” says Lee Kolinsky, co-owner of seven13 Films. “With CBS-3 and Alicia Nieves participating in the event, it’s the right step for great things to come.’’

The docuseries, Generation Change, is directed and produced by Joseph A. Halsey and written and produced by Kolinsky with a mission to increase social awareness about issues affecting our local youth. The film features Good Morning America’s Adrienne Bankert and youth from the local organization PEI Kids.
“We created this episode of Generation Change to find out what Trenton youth would do in their community if they were mayor,” says Halsey, co-owner of seven13 Films. “Now, these kids will get a chance to ask the mayoral candidates what they would change if they were elected,” Halsey adds. “Our film was designed to inspire a conversation and promote positive change in the community.”

“Producing and promoting this event has provided a great ‘real-world’ learning experience for everyone involved,” says Magrino. “My students and I are very excited to be working with Joe and Margaret and the entire seven13 Films crew. We are so grateful to them for this opportunity and for all of their time and guidance.”

Rider celebrates 150 years of women

LAWRENCE, N.J. — Rider Women’s Leadership Council (RWLC), organized a networking session, a women’s giving challenge, and a panel discussion for an audience of mostly women on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus, yesterday.

The council is celebrating 150 years of women at Rider University. These women include current students, staff and faculty, family and friends, as well as alumnae.

Among many noteworthy women at yesterday’s function were: Joan Mazzotti, class of ’72, and chair of the women’s giving challenge and also former executive director of Philadelphia Futures; Dr. Erica Ryan, chair of gender and sexuality studies; Sharrie Williams, news anchor at 6 ABC, Action News and mentor and moderator at event; Meghan Holohan, class of ’99, ’01, and sales manager at Bloomberg LP; and Krishna Powell, class of ’05, and president of HR 4 Your Small Biz, LLC.

Following the networking segment, Mazzotti asked the audience for 100 per cent participation in making donations or pledges to the “Giving Challenge” to raise $15,000 for the council.

She notes, “This is our chance to pay it forward by ensuring that current and future generations of Rider women have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed in the 21st century. Our time is now. Never has women supporting women at Rider been more important.”

The challenge was surpassed within 10 minutes of asking.

Women supported each other from the start, with Williams mentoring current students and others who are interested in her career as a television news anchor.

Williams was also the moderator of the panel discussion, which was entitled: My style is my strength: Leadership from a place of authenticity.

The effort was a part of 2017 Homecoming celebration at the university. The event organizers recognized that “Rider women take the reins,” as they continue to support each other.
