Gov. cheers: ‘Go on Art All Night!’

Embracing resilience and triumphing over tragedy, the Trenton community supported the return of Art All Night festival in the City this past weekend.

With beefed up law enforcement following last year’s tragic incident, the 24-hour Artworks event was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Saturday and to end at its usual time Sunday at 3 p.m., but there was a significant break from 1 to 7 a.m., for this year only.

This year, there were two public entrances to the event that the staff closed during the break as they asked patrons to leave at 1 a.m., and invited them to return at 7 a.m.

Artworks Director Lauren Otis explained that, “We want everyone to be comfortable…coming back, so we decided to close the event in the wee hours, but next year we’ll be back 24-hours.”

Otis appreciated turnout to see the art by 6 p.m. Saturday. He also said that more than 900 artists who

promised to continue to support the fest submitted artworks, but there were about 500 less than last year.

This year’s incident-free Art All Night event depicts the City’s beauty, with everything coming “together in a perfect triumphant storm,” said New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who spoke to a positive crowd at about 5:30 p.m.  Saturday.

Gov. Murphy said, “Art measures the soul of this particular community.” He believes that whatever takes place in Trenton affects the entire State of New Jersey.

Thanking all the supporters including City workers, law enforcement, artists, and the community at large, the Gov. officially kicked off the event by cheering it on.

“Go on Art All Night!” he said.

Curators open doors for various artists

PRINCETON, N.J. — Many local photographers and mixed media artists now have a chance to

showcase their artworks at local hospital galleries, thanks to a few area curators.

Princeton Photography Club Curator Sheila Geisler plans for future projects at their hospital galleries.

Among others making this possible, are curators from the Princeton Photography Club (PPC), which include Sheila Geisler, Lillian Ciuffreda, and Mark Poiani. David Anderson is president of the club.

The PPC oversees Millstone River Gallery at Merwick Care and Rehabilitation Center in Plainsboro, and Lakefront Gallery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton.

Geisler explained that, “the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (Lakefront Gallery) and the Millstone River Gallery at Merwick are maintained by the photo club in order to give local, emerging artists a place to show their work without a cost,” or fees because the club maintains the galleries.

At the recent opening reception for the “Pictures at an Exhibition” photography show at Millstone River Gallery, Geisler said that even though this specific exhibition is about photography, the galleries tend to be diverse with their artwork.

“We are able to invite many artists besides photographers to join us, including mixed media artists like what is currently at Lakefront Gallery,” she said.

The diversity of artists includes high school students who compete in the annual 4thCongressional Dist. Art Competition by U.S. Rep. Chris Smith, and recently the Trenton Street Artists.

It was very exciting for the Trenton Street Artists.

“This was the first time they ever hung in a hospital gallery,” said Geisler. “And we sold 10 pieces of their work. Then they got invited to other hospitals in the Trenton area to exhibit.”

She said PPC opened a whole new venue for them.

Geisler also said, “it’s a wonderful goal for the club to be able to allow the artists and the community to participate” in the art exhibitions.

She said they accept almost all the artists’ works.

“If the work is interesting, we hang them” in the galleries, she said.

The hospital galleries have become community attractions.

According to Christina Fleming, vice president of marketing and strategy at Windsor Healthcare Communities, the parent of Merwick Care, having the gallery in the hospital benefits everyone.

“We are good stewards to the community by opening our doors for them to come into our building and see how positive we are,” said Fleming.

She said it is not really a marketing strategy, but instead it allows people who might need nursing care at sometime in their lives to come visit the place and see how it is firsthand.

Geisler said the galleries are well-known and popular with the artists and the communities.

The curators are busy with future projects such as a major Pine Barrens exhibition for PPC with Pinelands Preservation Alliance, which will open in Jan. 2020 at RWJ Hamilton Lakefront Gallery.

Other upcoming exhibitions will include artist Tasha O’Neill’s “Gifts from the Sea” and the Cool Women Poets at Millstone River Gallery in March.

Thinking about freelancing? Consider this

Today, millions of American artists are doing freelance work, and the business of freelance writing is filled with endless possibilities, opportunities and freedom.

One of the biggest advantages of freelance writing is that it takes almost nothing to start. The same is true for an artist. For either of them, it costs almost nothing to begin their journey.

Shelly Larson shares findings of a research in her article about freelance writing that is growing tremendously with more than 53 million Americans doing it.

Freelancing is an escape dream for many who do not want constraints on themselves, their work, or their time. It allows dreamers to escape into their dream world, and none does it better than the artist.
Artists crave freedom and creativity to showcase their talent and hard work to the world. They want to evoke emotions in others that give them abundant joy.

Although there are many aspirants to these artistic fields, only few make the leap. We can refer to the adage: There are two sides to the same coin. That is, freelancing has pros and cons.

There is a huge growth in demand for artists and freelance writers, owing to the Internet revolution and self-publishing sites like YouTube and Facebook.

As a freelance writer or artist, you do not have to worry about where to go to work. A freelance writer can work from almost anywhere in the world, with reasonable Internet connection. Artists do not have to worry either, because art is appreciated everywhere.

Artists are their own bosses and do not have to work for anyone except the vision of their art. Art is beautiful to the artist, and the idea of provoking emotions in others simply by your work of art is very intriguing.

However, on the flipside of the coin, freelance writers and artists have inconsistent income. Their hands can be so full sometimes that they might just have to turn down a few things. At other times, they are trying to find water in a desert.

Low income is a very high possibility for artists and freelance writers due to a lack of skill in lead acquisition. Although freelance writers and artists have freedoms that regular jobs do not have, they do not have the health benefits that most regular jobs offer.

Kristin Rymoen Ellstrom shares in her article that being an artist can be lonely. After all, she finds that most of the creative fields are solitary.

Whatever freelance field you choose, whether it is freelance writing or the path of an artist, you should consider the pros and the cons mentioned here.

America’s Got Talent hits new level of competition

Video source: NBC.com

With an interesting addition to the judge’s panel, the new season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent is promising to be one of the most competitive so far.

Maybe it’s Simon Cowell’s new paternity, but some people are saying that the “bad cop” of talent show panels is giving more standing ovations and using some softer approaches for his feedback.

The judge we love to hate seems to have changed. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing if it’s inspiring judges to appear more human and give us that golden-buzzer moment we all hope to experience. Everybody loves a golden story.

It looks like every year the bar is raised a bit more, and acts need to appeal to their creativity to really stand out among literally thousands of hopefuls

So the dancing gets edgier, the singers are younger and more prepared, the magic gets more shocking, and we as an audience are getting more demanding. The expectations are high. And the auditions have not disappointed this season.

Last week, one of the highlights of the show was 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal, who wowed audience and judges alike with her voice, when she interpreted an original song called “I don’t know my name” in front of the biggest audience she had faced so far. Her mature and charming voice accompanied by her playing the ukulele, together with lyrics wise beyond her years, earned her a standing ovation.

It’s not common to see a singer-songwriter this young and so impressive. Simon Cowell stood up with a telling smile, that we have seen whenever he finds someone this special.

Howie Mandel called the young lady, “A beautiful, walking miracle,” while the audience cheered and Grace could not contain her excitement.

Mandel then proceeded to press that golden buzzer after his speech, sending the girl straight to the live shows. He even went onstage to hug Grace.

Her family backstage expressed their happiness with tears of joy

During the height of the celebration, Simon Cowell said he predicts this girl is going to be “the next Taylor Swift.”

Grace has already gotten the attention of the media and was even interviewed by Rolling Stone.

With this season’s variety of quality artists, we can be sure to witness many memorable moments, and see true talent.
