D&R Greenway Land Trust to present two special lectures at the Discovery Center at Point Breeze
Point Breeze Artifact Restoration – Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
BORDENTOWN, N.J. — The first lecture will be from artifacts restoration experts Phil Getty and Gary McGowan, who will speak about their special discoveries at the Gardener’s House at Point Breeze!
D&R Greenway: “Did you know that underground treasures were found at our preserve in Bordentown?”
When the Discovery Center of Point Breeze was established in 2020, many professional experts studied the Gardener’s House and its surrounding land. There was an archeological dig and professional excavation on the acre of land that D&R Greenway has turned into a beautiful visitor’s center showcasing many layers of history.
Environmental Hydrogeologist Phil Getty will share with you his metal detector finds from around the grounds of the former gardener’s house on the grounds of Point Breeze. Some interesting clues surfaced that may open new archaeological interests to study.

McGowan, a professional artifact restorer, will share with you the various techniques and challenges faced when trying to restore artifacts. He will have many interesting examples, some of which may be helpful for you to learn how to restore some of your precious antiques and jewelry.
McGowan is President and Principal Conservator of Cultural Preservation & Restoration. He holds a Master of Museum Studies with a concentration in Conservation from the State University of New York.
Mr. McGowan has over 30 years of experience conserving a wide variety of materials including decorative and fine arts, archaeological and ethnographic materials and historic monuments. Mr. McGowan has attained the distinction of Professional Associate from the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic works and is President Emeritus of the New York Regional Association of Conservation.

Biodiversity of the Abbott Marshlands – Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m.
The second lecture will be by Mary Allessio Leck, Emeritus Professor of Biology at Rider University. She will give a presentation on the incredible diversity and beauty of the Abbott Marshlands.
If you haven’t hiked, biked, or canoed/kayaked through this unique local wonder, be sure to attend her talk. Even if you have been taking advantage of the area, here’s another great opportunity to get some deeper insights and to ask questions.
Leck has had an interest in the marsh since she started doing research there in the mid-1970s. She has played a pivotal role in promoting the significance of the Marshlands as an ecological resource for research and education.
Since the 1990’s she has been working with landowners and concerned community members to help to preserve and protect the marshlands. Today, the group she founded is known as the Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, and continues to support marsh activities.
Leck’s discussion will be complemented by Pat Coleman, President of Friends for the Abbott Marshlands, who will consider recent marsh council actions, future objectives, and how you can help further preservation of this very special place by sharing your unique talents.
