As Cruise suspends all driverless operations, a look at the lack of clear federal regulations and fragmented oversight governing self-driving cars in the US

—  The whiplash from approval to ban in just two months highlights the fragmented oversight governing the fledgling industry

Trisha Thadani / Washington Post:

SAN FRANCISCO — Two months before Cruise’s driverless cars were yanked off the streets here for rolling over a pedestrian and dragging her about 20 feet, California regulators said they were confident in self-driving technology and gave the company permission to operate its robotaxi service around the city.

That approval was a pivotal moment for the self-driving car industry, as it expanded one of the biggest test cases in the world for the technology. But now, following a horrendous Oct. 2 crash that critically injured a jaywalking pedestrian — and Cruise’s initial misrepresentation over what actually happened that night — officials here are rethinking whether self-driving cars are ready for the road, and experts are encouraging other states to do the same.

This Thursday, just two days after the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s driverless permits, the company said it would suspend all driverless operations around the country to examine its process and earn back public trust.

“It was just a matter of time before an incident like this occurred,” San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said of the Oct. 2 crash. “And it was incredibly unfortunate that it happened, but it is not a complete surprise.”

Immediately after California’s Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted in August to allow General Motors’ Cruise and Google’s Waymo to charge for rides 24/7 around San Francisco, Chiu filed a motion to halt the commercial expansion, arguing the driverless cars had serious “public safety ramifications.”

Here in California, the whiplash from approval to ban in just two months highlights the fragmented oversight governing the self-driving car industry — a system that allowed Cruise to operate on San Francisco’s roads for more than three weeks following the October collision, despite dragging a human pinned underneath the vehicle.

California Assembly member Phil Ting (D), whose district includes San Francisco, said the DMV did “the right thing” by suspending the permits when it learned the full extent of the crash. While state legislators are grappling with how to control this rapidly developing industry, he said the DMV already has a rigorous permit approval process for autonomous vehicles. Cruise, for example, said it has received seven different permits over the past few years from the DMV to operate in California.

In California alone, there are more than 40 companies — ranging from young start-ups to tech giants — that have permits to test their self-driving cars in San Francisco, according to the DMV. According to a Washington Post analysis of the data, the companies collectively report millions of miles on public roads every year, along with hundreds of mostly minor accidents.

“It’s hard being first, that’s the problem,” Ting said. “We are doing the best we can with what we know, while knowing that [autonomous vehicles] are part of our future. But how do we regulate it, not squash it?”

Adam Driver recalls ‘terrifying’ experience driving old school race car for ‘Ferrari:’ ‘If you turn the wrong way, you’re dead’

Although Adam Driver portrays legendary sports-car magnate Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s biographical drama, the actor didn’t get to drive one of the 1950s-era replicas for “Ferrari.”

Instead, he drove an “open-wheel single seater” that was modified to connect a camera to it. Asked how it was getting behind the wheel of that particular vintage sports car, Driver simply replied, “Terrifying.”

“It teleports you back to the time and you realize if you turn left or right the wrong way, then you’re dead,” Driver told Variety at the “Ferrari” North American premiere at the New York Film Festival Friday night. “There’s at least seatbelts in the newer cars.”

Driver described the single seater as a “moving coffin” at a New York Film Festival press conference earlier on Friday.

The driving occurred at “an abandoned airstrip in Modena, Italy,” he recalled. “And you can really feel how dangerous they are obviously, versus a contemporary Ferrari. The goal was to get thrown from the car because that was considered more safe than to be locked in this moving coffin.”

Mann then clarified Driver’s description, saying, “The idea was you’d rather be thrown from the car than dragged by the car, so that’s why they didn’t wear seatbelts.”

To prepare the team for the racing sequences in “Ferrari,” Mann had several actors, including Driver, test drive contemporary Ferraris in pre-production.

“I wanted everybody to have an experience of driving these cars on a racetrack,” Mann told the audience at the morning press conference, calling it “racecar driving 101.”

“Ferrari” follows the life of automotive mogul Enzo in 1957 as his company prepares to enter the Mille Miglia, a 1000-mile, open-road motorsport race. Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leone and Sarah Gadon attended the NYFF premiere alongside “Ferrari” director Mann and co-star Driver.

Mann estimates there were at least 14 or 15 cars involved in the 1957 Mille Miglia race sequence.

“And then the main Ferraris and Maseratis, which we recreated exactly to scale, we were able to 3D scan real [50s-era models], which are insanely valuable,” Mann continued.

“Our cars could go 140-150 miles an hour, and do so safely.”

Mann, who has known Enzo’s son Piero Ferrari for about 25 years, recalled some of the conversations he had with the Ferrari vice chairman in preparation for the biopic.

“There were all kinds of conversations. What was his mother like? Did his mother cook?” Mann told Variety.

“That house in the countryside was the only place in which Enzo was in repose, in which he relaxed and became informal. He was never casual or informal anywhere else. His father never made coffee, he never shaved himself his entire life — he always went to the barber shop, and the barber shop we shoot is run by the son of Enzo’s barber. Nothing’s changed.”

“Ferrari” premieres in theaters Dec. 25.

Resort Aquatica transports readers to tropical paradise full of deadly secrets

NORFOLK, Va. — Calvin Banks had a privileged life laid out neatly in front of him: one that would feature incredible wealth, just like his billionaire father’s. Yet those plans are dashed when he drunkenly totals his Lamborghini and cuts his girlfriend’s life short in one fell swoop.

In Resort Aquatica, Frederic Lee brings glamorous characters and an even more immaculate underwater oasis to life. This enthralling debut explores themes of power, corruption, secrets and survival.

In a scheme to outrun justice, Calvin breaks court orders and sets off for an island resort pocketed within the mystical angles of the Bermuda Triangle. The magnificent Resort Aquatica is an ideal tropical destination built of white marble that rises up in tubular stacks amid the neon seascape.

Upon arrival, Calvin encounters Resort Aquatica’s rich and savvy owner, Eve Rampant, who clearly exploits her bigwig guests and poor workers for the sole purpose of profit. Eve lords over the palatial estate heavy-handedly, yet with a beautiful smiling face and the assistance of her five obedient daughters.
To Calvin’s awe, he discovers that the Rampant women are devious mermaids who naturally spring up from the seas on temporary legs each summer. Then, out of nowhere, Calvin finds himself entangled in a binding contract cooked up by Eve that forces him to serve the whims of the Rampant women for decades to come — and keep his mouth shut about their scaly secret. Can Calvin find a way to free himself from this contract and escape Resort Aquatica?

“My book offers a fresh take on mermaids, presented in a tropical fantasy adventure full of deadly secrets, romance and deceit,” Lee said. “It’s the perfect literary escape!”

JUXTA introduces game-changing autonomous micro-retail stores to support customers in the electric vehicle charging ecosphere

RALEIGH, N.C. —  JUXTA, a global technology company and micro convenience retail store provider, is poised to revolutionize the retail landscape with the launch of the fully equipped, pre-assembled, autonomously operated JUXTA Nomad.

Created to support customers in the rapidly expanding EV charging sector, the JUXTA Nomad can be fully installed and operational within 12 hours, enabling drivers and passengers to purchase food and drinks while waiting for their vehicles to charge.

JUXTA is a US-based corporate start-up formed in 2022 by Vontier, a global industrial technology company, which also incorporates Gilbarco Veeder-Root, a world-leading supplier of fueling and convenience store equipment.

Om Shankar, JUXTA Co-founder and CEO: “JUXTA was born to deliver a technology-driven step change in the micro-retail landscape. Our mission iFs to support station operators transitioning from traditional hydrocarbon fuel stations to EV charging points and collaborate with established retail brands to extend their presence beyond fuel pumps by adding value to the charging station experience and driving top-line growth.

“While there are other players in the autonomous retail ecosphere, JUXTA’s offer is unique, as it is the only turnkey store on the market that does not require complex integrations. Our Nomads are also exclusively targeted at the micro convenience retail landscape and have been specifically designed, developed, and trialed over an eighteen-month period to provide multiple benefits for EV charging operators.”

“EV players have always known that they have to solve the retail challenge on their sites, but until now, there has been no immediate solution –       JUXTA provides that solution. The JUXTA Nomad is the world’s most technologically advanced walk-in vending machine. All our customers need to do is take delivery, connect to electricity power, stock the shelves, cut the ribbon and then walk away, leaving the Nomad to start retailing immediately.”

Solving the labor challenge

The fully autonomous nature of the JUXTA Nomad removes operator dependency on fixed human labor, eradicating the challenge of finding and retaining staff that currently blight the retail sector.

With no requirement to accommodate staff or a counter, optimum space is devoted to stock within the 264 square feet (24.5 square meter) Nomad interior. Coupled with state-of-the-art shelving and presentation units, the expanse enables customers to stock between 500 and 600 fast-moving, high-margin items.

“The JUXTA Nomad offers the most profitable per square foot retail format in the world,” explains Shankar. “Each Nomad also provides customers with a comprehensive suite of real time data, enabling them to optimize their retail strategy and precision-target their customers by stocking only high-demand items to reduce waste and enhance profitability.”

App-free access

While waiting for their vehicles to charge, drivers and passengers can enjoy the ultimate quick and convenient retail experience. With no need to download an app or register for membership, shoppers can gain instant access to the JUXTA Nomad with the touch of a debit or credit card, whether carried physically or stored digitally on their smartphone’s wallet or smartwatch.

Once inside the store, customers can select from a range of snacks, sandwiches, hot drinks, and fresh fruit, or select larger items for dinner at home later – whatever the retailer chooses to stock depending on each Nomad’s location and customer purchase data. For example, operators of Nomads positioned by remote EV charging points far from any urban conurbation could prioritize drinks and snacks to be consumed by drivers while waiting for their vehicles to charge. Operators of Nomads located by EV charging stations closer to or within towns and cities could also choose to stock larger items, such as readymade meals, for shoppers to purchase and consume when they return to their homes.

Inside the Nomad, shelf and cabinet sensors instantly detect when an item is picked up, and an array of cameras will anonymously identify by whom. The information is combined in the cloud to create a digital basket for each customer. If a family or group of shoppers enter the store, JUXTA’s AI-driven technology will collate their purchases.

Where legislation permits, JUXTA’s technology will enable compliant retail of age-restricted items such as alcohol or cigarettes. Contained within specific age-verified fridges and dispensers, restricted items will only be released after cameras have confirmed the purchaser is of appropriate age. The technology will also have the scope to request and verify IDs, such as driving licenses, to confirm the purchaser’s age if necessary.

Customers can verify their purchased items on a large touch screen before they exit the store. However, if they prefer to minimize their shopping time, they can walk straight out with their purchases, entrusting JUXTA’s technology to record their purchases and charge their credit or debit card.

Benefits beyond the charging station

Whilst JUXTA was born to primarily service the rapidly developing EV sector, the company’s Nomads can offer multiple benefits to other sectors. While the units require an electricity supply, they do not need to be connected to external water supply as in-store water reservoirs are used for hot drinks. A JUXTA Nomad can be transported and installed virtually anywhere within 12 hours. Potential locations include hospital car parks, festivals, campsites, tourist attractions and college campuses. Nor is the internal layout of the JUXTA Nomads limited solely to retailing typical convenience store items. The format can stock whatever the retailer wishes, even camping supplies.

JUXTA has developed its Nomads to allow operators and retailers free rein to brand the offer both inside and outside the store. Responsibility for maintenance, cleaning and restocking lies with the operator, with JUXTA’s AI and camera technology able to instantly identify and report any hygiene issues, such as spillages.

Depending on how far apart they are geographically dispersed, a single employee should be able to maintain 8 to 12 JUXTA Nomads daily. Access to multiple suppliers can be granted to facilitate the delivery of items such as daily newspapers, milk and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Field-proven and primed for global roll-out

JUXTA has successfully proven the efficacy of the hardware and software that underpins its transformative retail offer to the EV charging sector and beyond. The company has concluded a trial of its first autonomous Nomad in North Carolina and confirmed four further customer Nomads in the US, which will be fully operational later this year. JUXTA is also in advanced negotiations with customers in Europe, where it will introduce its first Nomads in 2024.

Mercer County Clerk continues to issue warnings to passport applicants

TRENTON — Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello is again issuing warnings to constituents in order to prevent them from wasting their precious time and money.

Residents should know the following:

Passport fees are required at all passport facilities

The U.S. Department of State advises all passport applicants that there are no free passports, nor fee waivers. Instead, it is true that a fee is required for all passport applications.

Payment is required at all Passport Acceptance Facilities, including the Mercer County Connection in Hamilton Township, and the Mercer County Clerk’s Office in Trenton.

There are recent social media videos circulating on the internet, which advise customers that passports can be free by submitting form I-912, but these are false, misleading and incorrect.

The form they are referring to is for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and not for Passport Services. The form is NOT a Department of State form and it is not honored by them.

Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello explained that videos on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, are not being produced by government officials, and have created confusion among constituents who believe they (the videos) are accurate.

For further information on the Form I-192 and the individuals eligible, please visit https://www.uscis.gov/i-192 for clear instructions and additional information.

It is recommended for those who are planning international travel to begin submitting their paperwork well in advance of any travel dates, to allow for any unforeseen delays. The current wait times for passport services are 7-9 weeks for expedited services and up to 14 weeks from the time of submission for a regular application. Please note, these times are estimates; if the workload is significantly heavy or light, that number can change.

For detailed information on documentation required for a passport, or office hours at the Mercer County Clerk’s Office, please visit https://www.mercercounty.org/government/county-clerk-/office-services/passportsand for detailed information on services at the Mercer County Connection in Hamilton, please visit https://www.mercercounty.org/departments/county-connection/passport-application-information

Mercer County Clerk issues warning to passport applicants and to veterans

TRENTON, N.J. — Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello is issuing two warnings to constituents that could cause a waste of precious time and money, the two things no one needs to lose, she says.

Passport Fees Required at all Passport Facilities

The U.S. Department of State advises all passport applicants that there are no free passports nor fee waivers, and that a fee is required for all passport applications.  Payment is required at all Passport Acceptance Facilities, including the Mercer County Connection in Hamilton Township and the Mercer County Clerk’s Office in Trenton.

Recent social media videos circulating on the internet, which advise customers that passports can be free by submitting form I-912 are false, misleading and incorrect. Veterans Filing Scam

Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello is alerting all Veterans of a fraudulent solicitation targeting those seeking assistance with filing their DD-214 discharge papers. The DD-214, or Certificate of Release or Honorable Discharge from Active Duty, is a vital document that verifies a Veteran’s military service and is often required when accessing various military benefits and entitlements. The Mercer County Clerk’s Office records such items free of charge, without the need for a middle man.

“Unfortunately, at least one opportunistic company is preying on Veterans by offering to file or obtain their DD-214 on their behalf in exchange for significant payments” said Covello.  A Company called “DD-214 DIRECT” out of Phoenix, Arizona is soliciting Veterans to pay to record copies of their discharge papers (DD-214).

We want to emphasize that the Mercer County Clerk’s Office files and provides certified copies of DD-214 discharge papers free of charge. Veterans can visit our office or contact us directly to receive guidance and support throughout the process, without incurring any unnecessary fees. Often, we record such documents when a Veteran visits our office to obtain a US Veteran ID Card.

For additional information on Veteran Services, please call 609-278-7108 or 609-989-6465 or visit the Clerk’s Office online at https://www.mercercounty.org/government/county-clerk

Pedestrian access

Access to the D&R Canal towpath will be maintained for pedestrians and cyclists on Washington Road southbound, crossing the Washington Road bridge over Carnegie Lake. Barriers will be in place to direct pedestrians and cyclists to the towpath a safe distance away from the active construction zone.

Pedestrians and cyclists on Washington Road northbound will not be able to access the D&R Canal towpath. Instead, they can use crossings at Alexander Street and Harrison Street.
