Mercer Park Commission receives approval for Community Based Deer Management

The Mercer County Park Commission has been approved for a Community Based Deer Management (CBDM) permit from the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

The CBDM permit allows for additional opportunities to improve forest understory and the overall ecological condition of natural areas through deer reductions beyond standard state hunting regulations. Reducing deer overpopulation also improves public safety by reducing deer-vehicle collisions.

No CBDM hunting will occur in areas that participate in the County’s traditional deer management hunting program until after the regular season concludes.

The additional measures permitted in the CBDM program will allow a professional culling firm to perform management activities during an extended season through March 31 at Howell Farm, County owned golf courses including Mountain View, Hopewell Valley, Princeton Country Club, Mercer Oaks East and West, and select regions of Mercer Meadows in Hopewell Township.

Management activities approved in the Park Commission’s permit include deer harvest by crossbow and firearm, culling during evening hours, and periodic closures for culling outside of the traditional State hunting season through March 31,2023.

At Mercer Meadows, the Curlis Woods region is included in the permit. Beginning February 19, 20245, this area will allow for crossbow culling Monday through Saturday through March 31 until 9 p.m. The Curlis Woods region will remain open to the public during this period of crossbow hunting. Park users are advised to remain on trails and wear bright colored clothing. All culling activity will take place from an elevated tree stand with a 75-foot safety buffer in place on either side of all County-recognized trails.

The Curlis Woods region will BE CLOSED to the public for shotgun culling on:

  • Wednesdays from February 21 through March 27

At County-owned golf courses including Princeton Country Club, Mountain View and Hopewell Valley Golf Courses, the permit allows for crossbow culling to take place Monday through Saturday, from sunrise until 9 p.m. January 1 though March 31. At Mercer Oaks East and West golf courses, crossbow culling may occur starting February 19 through March 31. The golf courses will be closed to the public during shotgun culling.

Golf courses will BE CLOSED to the public for shotgun culling as follows:

  • Hopewell Valley closed January 1 through January 31
  • Mercer Oaks East February 19 through February 29
  • Mountain View closed February 1 through February 29

At Howell Farm, the permit allows for extended evening culling (sunset through 9 p.m.) January 29 through March 31. Beginning in January, bow culling may take place Monday through Saturday, from sunrise to 9 p.m. until March 31. Howell Farm will be closed to the public during shotgun culling.

Howell Farm will BE CLOSED to the public for shotgun culling on:

  • Mondays January 29 through March 31
  • Tuesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. January 20 through March 29

The above dates do not include closures as part of the Park Commission’s existing deer management program. Please visit mercercountyparks.org for details on all closures for deer manage

DaleBoot partners with Aetrex to offer custom ski boots based on 3D foot scans

Partnership marks the first use of 3D foot scanning technology in custom ski gear

TEANECK, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Aetrex, Inc., a global market leader in foot scanning technology and data-driven orthotics and comfort footwear, on Tuesday announced its partnership with custom ski boot manufacturer DaleBoot.

Leveraging Aetrex’s Albert 2 Pro foot scanning technology, DaleBoot will transition from manually measuring customer’s feet to using automated 3D foot scan data to design custom ski boots, improving fit accuracy and customer satisfaction and reducing refitting rates during a compact winter retail season.

After years of testing several foot scanning technologies, DaleBoot selected Aetrex technology for its accuracy and ease of use. Aetrex’s scanners use a pure computer vision model to create the most accurate 3D reconstruction of the foot available on the market. DaleBoot customers will complete a 20 second foot scan on the Albert 2 Pro and answer questions on ski experience, previous discomfort with ski boots and preferred snow conditions. DaleBoot will then use the 3D foot scan data and customer-reported information to develop a pair of custom ski boots with a personalized-fit shell, a fully custom liner and in-boot and on-ski stance balance and alignment, in under a week.

“Most skiiers consider wearing uncomfortable ski boots an unavoidable experience when hitting the slopes. But any footwear, including ski boots, designed to fit your feet should never be painful. Our partnership with DaleBoot aims to make that a reality by bringing detailed, accurate 3D measurements and data-driven insights to the ski boot development process,” said Larry Schwartz, CEO of Aetrex.

As of August 2023, Aetrex scanners are currently in use at 8 DaleBoot stores, including Salt Lake City, UT, and Kitzbuehel, Austria locations. The company plans to bring Aetrex foot scanners to all 60 points of distribution in ski shops around the world.

“Our commitment to continuous innovation has made DaleBoot the custom boot manufacturer of choice for the industry since 1969. Our customers know they can always count on us for the latest and greatest in ski boot technology,” said Rob Graham, CEO of DaleBoot. “Partnering with Aetrex during this next phase of our evolution makes our boots more personalized and data-driven than ever before.”

Celebrity Chef Asma Khan to host Raghav Khanna’s ‘Tiffin Stories’ from Riverland, Tudip

Celebrity chef Asma Khan will host food documentary series “Tiffin Stories,” as it was revealed at Singapore’s Asia TV Forum & Market.

In the six-part “Tiffin Stories,” Asma Khan will be seen interacting with iconic Indians and the Indian diaspora, unearthing their nostalgia associated with food, while bringing to fore their life journeys.

The series will be filmed in India and the U.K.

Khan, who is originally from India, runs the immensely popular Darjeeling Express restaurant in London. An episode of Netflix’s “Chef’s Table” series was focused on her.

Raghav Khanna is the creator and showrunner of “Tiffin Stories.” Khanna is creative director and writer of acclaimed food documentary series, “Raja, Rasoi, Aur Anya Kahaniyaan,” and more recently he was leading documentary production for Netflix in APAC, where he was the studio executive on the Oscar-winning short documentary, “The Elephant Whisperers.” He has also directed the first episode of Applause Entertainment and Film Companion’s “Modern Masters,” revolving around “RRR” director S.S. Rajamouli.

In 2022, Singapore-based production group Beach House Pictures partnered with Khanna to launch Riverland Entertainment in Mumbai, India. “Tiffin Stories” will be produced by Riverland and Tudip Entertainment, a production studio that produces projects with an international appeal. Khanna, Dipti Agrawal and Tushar Apshankar serve as producers on the series.

“Food is central to every occasion in our lives-from birth and death, to marriages. In this series we celebrate the emotional link of food and stories. Often food becomes the language of love and resilience. ‘Tiffin Stories’ is a journey into those food memories,” Khan said. “This series is my homecoming – my first time telling the story of my food and its people. I cannot imagine anyone better than Raghav to collaborate with in this journey. Everything he has worked on has a sincerity and honesty that is deeply moving.”

Tudip CEO Agrawal added: “We truly believe that ‘Tiffin Stories’ has a universal appeal as a concept due to its focus on the emotional ties between food and life stories. Our aim  as Tudip is to collaborate with young and brilliant creators and talent such as Raghav and support non-fiction projects having novel and diverse subjects and elevated execution.”

Khanna said: “People’s emotional association with food, its manifestation as nostalgic memorabilia has fascinated me. In this series we aim to tell deeply personal stories of individual journeys, of perseverance and triumph, with food acting as the binding agent. I have immense admiration for Asma’s art and her contribution to Indian cuisine. I vividly remember being inspired by her episode on ‘Chef’s Table.’ Asma and I met last year and we discussed making a food series together that goes beyond food, delving into its emotional and personal aspects.”

“I feel there is no better time to tell unscripted stories. The last few years have shown that the audience’s engagement with documentaries has been through the charts. Thanks to the streaming ecosystem, stories told with authenticity now stand to find global patrons,” Khanna added.

Area Park Naturalist explains: Tap, tap, tap! Woodpeckers at work

Many of us recognize that tapping sound as belonging to a woodpecker. But do you know why they are tapping? One reason may be that they are looking for their next meal.

A woodpecker’s diet consists of a variety of wood-boring insects, such as larvae, carpenter ants, termites, and carpenter bees. These insects are readily found in dead or diseased trees and the tapping means the woodpeckers are drilling a hole to get to the insects.

However, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a migratory woodpecker, will tap holes into trees to lick up some tasty sap along with the insects that are also attracted to the sap.

A second reason you may hear tapping is when woodpeckers are creating cavities to nest in. They will choose dying trees, as those are easier to dig out a cavity.

You may see wood shavings at the bottom of the tree, or if you witness them excavating, you may notice wood shavings getting tossed out and floating down to the ground. Each species will create a cavity that is deep enough for their eggs and a bird to sit in.  Our smallest woodpecker, the Downy, creates an entrance hole that is only 1 ½ inches in diameter, while the largest woodpecker, the Pileated, creates an oblong cavity that is 3 ½ inches wide and 4 ¾ inches tall and takes almost 6 weeks to build.

Woodpeckers also use drumming on trees to communicate to other woodpeckers. They are alerting others that this is their territory, and also trying to attract a mate. But what does it mean when a woodpecker drums on your metal chimney? Well, this drumming sound is much louder than on a tree, like using cymbals in an orchestra, and therefore sends across a much stronger louder message.

Unfortunately, if you hear a woodpecker drumming on your siding, or see evidence of holes, it’s time to call an exterminator, because this probably means that your siding has some of those yummy insects’ woodpeckers enjoy.

Next time you go out into a forested area, listen for a tap, tap, tap, and then look carefully for woodpeckers pecking into decaying trees. Better yet, join us for a Woodpecker Walk on Friday, February 23 where we will be looking for evidence of woodpeckers and the seven different species found in Mercer County parks. Aetrex launches FitStarter technology platform to offer retailers immediate footwear fitting solution

Integrating the Heeluxe SmartLast system with Aetrex’s 3D foot scanning technology, retailers can provide fit recommendations to consumers upon program implementation

TEANECK, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Aetrex, Inc. (“Aetrex”), a global market leader in foot scanning technology and data-driven orthotics and comfort footwear, today announced FitStarter, a personalized footwear recommendation platform designed to help retailers improve their shoe fitting service for shoppers, reduce returns and increase customer satisfaction.

Developed in partnership with the premier shoe fit testing company Heeluxe, FitStarter is an accurate, turnkey starting point to Aetrex’s AI-powered shoe match-making platform, FitGenius. Retailers can easily add FitStarter to their existing Albert 3D foot scanner (Albert 2 Pro or Albert 3DFit) software.

To support FitStarter, Aetrex is establishing multiple Fit Labs to analyze shoes submitted by participating retailers each season. A member of the Aetrex Technology team will analyze the shoes using the patented Hank Jr Shoe Fitting SmartLast system developed by Heeluxe, which leverages pressure sensor technology. Within days, retailers will have footwear and fit recommendations available within their Aetrex Albert software. Once Aetrex collects shoe data within the Fit Lab, the FitStarter platform will analyze each customer’s unique 3D foot scan data collected in store alongside the Fit Lab data to provide immediate, personalized fitting recommendations.

“While FitGenius remains our gold standard fit recommendation offering for retailers, not every retailer has the capacity to quickly collect the required 5,000 foot scan data points necessary to feed the AI platform,” said Larry Schwartz, CEO of Aetrex.

“With FitStarter, retailers can provide accurate shoe fit recommendations from day-one of installation while also collecting the foot scan data points needed to upgrade to the premium FitGenius AI.”

The FitStarter program provides in-store shoppers with personalized fit recommendations, while FitGenius has the capability to provide ideal footwear recommendations to consumers both in store and online. After a shopper completes an Aetrex 3D foot scan at a participating retail location, FitStarter will rank the retailer’s footwear inventory based on the likelihood of a good fit for that individual from excellent to poor. It will also display a graphic of the consumer’s selected shoe, highlighting areas that fit well and potential areas of pressure. FitStarter also considers the shopper’s preference for shoe fit, ranging from snug to roomy.

“Like Aetrex, Hank Jr Shoe Fitting is focused on data-driven technology solutions to improve footwear fit and design, bringing natural synergy to our partnership,” said Dr. Geoffrey Gray, founder of Heeluxe and Hank Jr Shoe Fitting, Inc.

“This partnership allows us to bring our shoe data and testing process to the masses in an effort to help shoppers around the world get into the right fitting footwear on the first try, quickly and easily.”

FitStarter will be available to existing and interested Aetrex foot scanning partners on January 1, 2024 on a service subscription model. To learn more about FitStarter and all Aetrex technology offerings, visit aetrex.com.

Six Flags Magic Mountain breaks ground on California’s largest solar energy project

Phase One for New 12.37-Megawatt Solar Carport Structure Begins on November 1

LOS ANGELES — (BUSINESS WIRE) — #SixFlagsMagicMountain — Six Flags Magic Mountain, the undisputed Thrill Capital of the World, in partnership with Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables (DSD), today announced the official ground breaking of a new 12.37-megawatt solar carport and energy storage system. The Six Flags Magic Mountain project is the largest single-site commercial renewable energy project in California and largest solar project allocated toward a for-profit organization in the United States.

“We’re thrilled to be breaking ground on this monumental project and taking the next step towards a cleaner, greener future,” said Six Flags Magic Mountain Interim Park President Jeff Harris.

“We’re continuing to make advancements towards improving and protecting the environment, and are honored to be industry leaders, paving the way for other theme park companies around the world. Our partners and established solar and renewable energy industry experts at Solar Optimum and DSD Renewables, as well as our partners with Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s Office, have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition, allowing us to break ground at an increased timeline. Getting a glance at what this massive structure will bring to our parks and community is simply remarkable,” he added.

Key components of the Six Flags Magic Mountain solar installation include:

  • A 637,000 square foot, 12.37-megawatt solar carport built over the main guest parking lot and team member parking lot;
  • The park will be able to offset 100% of its energy usage with solar power;
  • Estimated 3,544 guest parking spaces and 771 team member parking spaces;
  • Approximately 30 electric vehicle charging spaces in the guest parking lot;
  • Added shade coverage to keep cars cool for guests and team members;
  • Increased security systems and protection;
  • Battery storage system producing approximately 2 megawatts of power with up to 8-megawatt hours of capacity that can be deployed daily;
  • Produce 20.8 million kilowatt hours of energy annually, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 2,874 homes;
  • Offset greenhouse gas emissions each year comparable to 34,194 barrels of oil consumed, 5,110 tons of waste recycled rather than landfilled, and 17,612 acres of U.S. forests;
  • Offset carbon dioxide equivalents each year comparable to taking 3,182 cars off the road, 37.8 million miles driven by an average gasoline-powered automobile, and 1.6 million gallons of gasoline consumed; and
  • Produce 517.89 million kilowatt hours of energy in a 25-year period, which offsets greenhouse gas energy consumption equivalent to 911 million miles driven by gasoline-powered automobiles and the carbon sequestration equivalent to 434.3 thousand acres of trees planted.

The Six Flags Magic Mountain project is the third solar installation for Six Flags. Properties in Northern California at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and New Jersey at Six Flags Great Adventure have also developed on-site solar capabilities with over 30 megawatts of fully operational solar power systems installed. These three sites will rank as the largest volume of onsite Solar PV systems for any U.S. organization with a combined total of 42.37 megawatts.

“We are excited to break ground on this solar-plus-storage project at Six Flags Magic Mountain and watch the Solar Optimum team work their installation magic. Solar canopies have always been an excellent use of otherwise underutilized space and this site, with its wide open parking lots, provides the perfect canvas to build on,” said Danielle Fidel, Senior Director, Developer Network at DSD. “Partnering with Solar Optimum through DSD’s Developer Network has allowed us to make this project a reality for Six Flags and we’re looking forward to it coming to life!”

“The Six Flags Magic Mountain solar project stands as the largest of its kind in the nation, boasting an impressive area exceeding 637,000 square feet of shade structures,” said Arno Aghamalian, CEO and Founder of Solar Optimum. “The magnitude of this undertaking is a marvel in itself, and as we initiate the construction phase, we are excited to offer a glimpse into what this project will evolve into by the year’s end.”

“Not only does this project rank as a remarkable national achievement, showcasing the integration of solar technology, carports, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging, but it is also a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of all those involved,” continued Aghamalian. “From the offices of the Governor and LA County Supervisor to SCE, our development partners, and a dedicated team of individuals, we are rapidly ushering this project to completion.”

For 63 years, Six Flags has been committed to protecting and improving the environment and its communities, striving toward the expansion of sustainability and ESG-related initiatives and efforts. By actively working to reduce the environmental impact of its amusement park operations, the company continues to make meaningful advancements in adopting solar power throughout its operations and otherwise reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
