MATTER opens applications for accelerator focused on reducing maternal mortality in the US

Health Care Service Corporation, Laerdal Million Lives Fund, BayCare, Parkview Health, University of Chicago Medicine, Organon and Stryker to support cohort of women’s health startups; including $125,000 of investment for each selected company

CHICAGO — (BUSINESS WIRE) — MATTER, the premier healthcare incubator and innovation hub, has opened applications for the second 51 Labs, an accelerator focused on women’s health.

This year’s program focuses on preventing maternal mortality in the U.S. before, during and after birth and receives support from Health Care Service Corporation, Laerdal Million Lives Fund, BayCare, Parkview Health, University of Chicago Medicine, Organon and Stryker.

Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a report showing that the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. worsened by 40 percent from 2020 to 2021.1 The maternal mortality rate is now the highest in the U.S. since 1965 and is far worse than other industrialized nations.

While all ages and races saw an increase in maternal mortality in 2021, many inequities still exist due to a variety of factors, including but not limited to access to quality care, socioeconomic status, race and education level. For example, Black women are three times as likely to die from pregnancy or pregnancy-related causes as white women in the U.S.2

“51 Labs is designed to address gaps in investment and innovation in women’s health,” said Steven Collens, CEO of MATTER. “We are pleased to partner with seven key industry stakeholders to help a cohort of startups advance solutions to help address the maternal mortality crisis in the U.S.”

The Laerdal Million Lives Fund, a global venture capital fund dedicated to transformative technologies that can help save lives, will serve as a capital partner for this cohort of 51 Labs companies. “Many maternal deaths are preventable. By investing in enabling technologies and digital solutions that can drive early interventions with high life saving potential and quality improvement initiatives, we can help scale companies working in this critical area,” said Becca Shmukler, principal of Laerdal Million Lives Fund.

The second cohort of the 51 Labs accelerator will address the question:

How can we prevent maternal mortality in the U.S. before, during and after birth?

The program will have three tracks: 1) supporting access to regular prenatal care to identify and mitigate potential risk factors earlier; 2) lowering the incidence of maternal health complications; and 3) supporting mothers during the 12 months after giving birth.

“It’s critically important to support innovative solutions to help moms and babies thrive,” said Dr. Monica Berner, chief clinical officer for Health Care Service Corporation. “Earlier this year, HCSC launched an expanded maternal and infant health initiative to improve health outcomes by increasing access to care, reducing care gaps, and educating and engaging residents on a community level. This 51 Labs program is another way we can help support other innovators who are seeking to tackle this critical issue.”

Applications for the 12-week accelerator are now open. Participating startups will benefit from one-on-one mentoring with industry experts, workshops, interactive roundtable discussions, forums and more. Additionally, each of the selected companies will receive an investment of $125,000, including $100,000 cash from the Laerdal Million Lives Fund and $25,000 of services from MATTER.

The program will culminate with a final showcase in May 2024.

Lupita Nyong’o named Berlin Film Festival jury president

Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning Kenyan-Mexican actor and filmmaker, will preside over the international jury of the upcoming Berlin Film Festival.

She will be the second consecutive female jury president at the Berlinale, following fellow actor Kristen Stewart.

“Lupita Nyong’o embodies what we like in cinema: versatility in embracing different projects, addressing different audiences, and consistency to one idea that is quite recognisable in her characters, as diverse as they may look,” said Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian.

Lupita Nyong’o, who broke through in “12 Years a Slave,” said she was “deeply honored to serve as the President of the International Jury of the Berlin International Film Festival.”

“I look forward to celebrating and recognising the outstanding work of filmmakers from around the world,” Nyong’o continued.

On top of winning a best supporting Oscar for her performance in “12 Years a Slave,” she has received the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Critics’ Choice Award, the Independent Spirit Award and the NAACP Image Award. She went on to garner further acclaim with her role as the warrior Nakia in “Black Panther” and its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Her other credits include “Us,” “Little Monsters,” “Queen of Katwe,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “The 355.” Her upcoming projects include the horror franchise spin-off series “A Quiet Place: Day One.”

Nyong’o is also involved behind the camera. She recently executive produced the Sudanese film “Goodbye Julia,” directed by Mohamed Kordofani. The movie was selected by the Sudanese National Committee operating in exile to compete in the international feature film race at the Oscars.

An outspoken activist, Nyong’o is currently preparing a podcast focussing on non-fictional storytelling from the African diaspora. One of her projects is a series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanah.” Nyong is also an author, having penned the New York Times bestselling children’s book “Sulwe” in 2020.

This 74th Berlin Film Festival will mark the last under the current leadership. Both Rissenbeek and Chatrian will step down after this edition as their respective mandate ends. The festival’s future director will be announced tomorrow during a press conference in Berlin.

Art: On the Edge – Polar Bear by James Fiorentino
Art: David and Goliath by Liz Cutler
Art: Nosing In by Deb Brockway

A new exhibit featuring four award-winning artists will be view and art sales will benefit the land trust’s work to preserve and care for land, maintain public trails, grow food for the hungry, and inspire a conservation ethic.

Internationally acclaimed cartoonist Patrick McDonnell will be on hand to sign his books as holiday gifts. Twenty-five of his MUTTS cartoon prints, featuring environmental and animal themes, signed and remarqued with original drawings, are available for holiday gift-giving.

These specially selected artworks illustrate McDonnell’s overriding message of compassion and kindness, much needed in today’s world. His comic strip, begun in 1994, is now in over 700 newspapers and 20 countries.  Patrick has collaborated with Jane Goodall, Eckhart Tolle, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and most recently with Marvel on a Superheroes book.

The lobby of the Johnson Education Center greets visitors with a large painting of a tiger, perfectly suited for Princeton University alumni.

Artist James Fiorentino began painting as a child and had his art featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., when he was just 15 years of age. He has created a set of baseball cards, as well as portraits of world heroes and celebrities.

He is showing his wildlife art in the Marie L. Matthews Gallery at D&R Greenway, with an emphasis on conservation of species. He will be available to talk with visitors on Dec. 9 about his experiences banding birds, observing wildlife and meeting celebrities.

Quilter Deb Brockway is known to many locally as a trail builder. She has participated for over a decade in building trails on preserved lands. An accomplished quilter, she turned to landscape quilting to depict the beauty she found in nature. Quilts on display show a butterfly alighting on a flower, a hiker walking past spring ephemerals on a forest path, a kayak nosing into the water with wildlife, and a cardinal attempting to camouflage among the trees. Brockway’s quilted wall hangings are beautiful to view and perfect for wintertime gift giving.

Retired Princeton Day School teacher Liz Cutler, who led the school’s sustainability club to inspire students to observe and care for nature, is showing her botanical art in memory of her son, Isaac. Together, they walked Greenway Meadows park throughout his lifetime. Liz turned to the meditative art of collecting and pressing flowers into unique artistic expressions during his illness. She follows the Flower Pressers Ethos to ensure that anything she collects will do no harm to the species or environment. New artwork that has never been shown before fills a dark wood room in the renovated barn that is the Johnson Education Center, bringing color to the room and a feeling of being surrounded by a wildflower meadow.

Plein air paintings created by the Garden State Watercolor Society will be available for purchase through a silent auction. These paintings depict different scenes from Hillside Farm, an 800-acre property with expansive views of Hopewell Valley. Hillside Farm was home to the late philanthropist Betty Wold Johnson who cared deeply about the importance of preserving as much land as possible.  Her two sons, Robert Wood Johnson, former United States ambassador to the United Kingdom and owner of the New York Jets football team; and Christopher Wold Johnson, Jets co-owner and businessman, donated the property to D&R Greenway in honor of their mother.

Linda Mead, CEO of D&R Greenway, who gathered these artists for this unique show and gifting opportunity, invites the public to the open house on Dec. 9.

“When this art went up on our walls, we were all taken aback by its individual beauty and collective magnitude. Join us to meet the artists and enjoy conversation with friends while you shop and support our mission!”

Second edition of Emerge development program gets Singapore, Taiwan backing

The Singapore Film Commission and the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) have agreed to back training and development program, Emerge, which supports writers, directors and producers to develop Chinese-language original films.

The announcement was unveiled on Friday within the context of the Asia Television Forum (ATF) in Singapore. Signatories included the executive chair of SFC, Justin Ang and chairperson of TAICCA, Homme Tsai.

The 12-week programme will combine hybrid and virtual sessions held in both Singapore and Taiwan from March to May 2024. In-person classes are scheduled to take place in Singapore in March, hybrid workshops and consultations online and in Taiwan, culminating in a final pitch day and award ceremony, planned at the Marche du Film Market in Cannes, May.

The session will include experienced global film producers, directors and executives including Ron Howard, Sukee Chew (“Sugar23”), Trey Callaway (“9-1-1 Lonestar”), Derek Tsang (“Better Days”) and Jojo Hui (“The Warlords”) as guest lecturers.

This is the second edition of Emerge, after a previous round backed by TAICCA, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment and Cora Yim’s Sixty Percent Productions.

“With the increasing demand for Asian storytelling all over the world, this collaboration provides a truly international platform for Singapore filmmakers to take their skills to the next level,” said Ang.

“Leveraging the resources of Hollywood and leading multinational film and television companies in Asia, the collaboration seeks to craft content that resonates on a global scale,” said TAICCA chair Homme Tsai.

“We had a successful inaugural Emerge with TAICCA and Sixty Percent Productions, which allowed us to work with talented storytellers that yielded results,” said Imagine executive chairmen Grazer and Howard, in a joint statement.

“Emerge has been fruitful since its launch last September, with five Taiwanese TV projects incubated and a TV series [Chang Kaichih and Chen Fang Chi’s “Gunshot”] greenlit by Public Television Service in Taiwan for further development. We are delighted to extend our program to developing films with filmmakers from Singapore,” said Yim.

Celebrity Chef Asma Khan to host Raghav Khanna’s ‘Tiffin Stories’ from Riverland, Tudip

Celebrity chef Asma Khan will host food documentary series “Tiffin Stories,” as it was revealed at Singapore’s Asia TV Forum & Market.

In the six-part “Tiffin Stories,” Asma Khan will be seen interacting with iconic Indians and the Indian diaspora, unearthing their nostalgia associated with food, while bringing to fore their life journeys.

The series will be filmed in India and the U.K.

Khan, who is originally from India, runs the immensely popular Darjeeling Express restaurant in London. An episode of Netflix’s “Chef’s Table” series was focused on her.

Raghav Khanna is the creator and showrunner of “Tiffin Stories.” Khanna is creative director and writer of acclaimed food documentary series, “Raja, Rasoi, Aur Anya Kahaniyaan,” and more recently he was leading documentary production for Netflix in APAC, where he was the studio executive on the Oscar-winning short documentary, “The Elephant Whisperers.” He has also directed the first episode of Applause Entertainment and Film Companion’s “Modern Masters,” revolving around “RRR” director S.S. Rajamouli.

In 2022, Singapore-based production group Beach House Pictures partnered with Khanna to launch Riverland Entertainment in Mumbai, India. “Tiffin Stories” will be produced by Riverland and Tudip Entertainment, a production studio that produces projects with an international appeal. Khanna, Dipti Agrawal and Tushar Apshankar serve as producers on the series.

“Food is central to every occasion in our lives-from birth and death, to marriages. In this series we celebrate the emotional link of food and stories. Often food becomes the language of love and resilience. ‘Tiffin Stories’ is a journey into those food memories,” Khan said. “This series is my homecoming – my first time telling the story of my food and its people. I cannot imagine anyone better than Raghav to collaborate with in this journey. Everything he has worked on has a sincerity and honesty that is deeply moving.”

Tudip CEO Agrawal added: “We truly believe that ‘Tiffin Stories’ has a universal appeal as a concept due to its focus on the emotional ties between food and life stories. Our aim  as Tudip is to collaborate with young and brilliant creators and talent such as Raghav and support non-fiction projects having novel and diverse subjects and elevated execution.”

Khanna said: “People’s emotional association with food, its manifestation as nostalgic memorabilia has fascinated me. In this series we aim to tell deeply personal stories of individual journeys, of perseverance and triumph, with food acting as the binding agent. I have immense admiration for Asma’s art and her contribution to Indian cuisine. I vividly remember being inspired by her episode on ‘Chef’s Table.’ Asma and I met last year and we discussed making a food series together that goes beyond food, delving into its emotional and personal aspects.”

“I feel there is no better time to tell unscripted stories. The last few years have shown that the audience’s engagement with documentaries has been through the charts. Thanks to the streaming ecosystem, stories told with authenticity now stand to find global patrons,” Khanna added.

Photo –  Display case in the Natural World Room at the Discovery Center at Point Breeze includes tree core samples among Native American and bird exhibits.

Located at 101 Park Street, Bordentown, N.J., the Discovery Center was created by D&R Greenway Land Trust in a renovated historic home that belonged to Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte’s gardener in the early 1800s. The house will be open with exhibits about the history, land and people of Point Breeze, including the Lenape and Bonaparte.

Photo – Historic Map showing location of historic trees at Point Breeze

During the month of December, a Holiday Tree will grace the Crown Jewels Gallery.

Visitors are invited to bring an ornament to decorate the tree, commemorating the history of Point Breeze, the natural features that can be found on the land or the local community. Homemade Fleur de Lis ornaments will be available to decorate for a small donation.

On Sunday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m., Dr. Dan Druckenbrod of Rider University will present “Talk about Trees” to tell the story of historic trees he has discovered on the Point Breeze land through a survey and tree core sampling.  Three of Dr. Druckenbrod’s core samples are on display at the Discovery Center, including one from a tree dated before the Bonaparte era.

A noted dendrologist, he has conducted a scientific study that began under the ownership of Divine Word Missionaries and continued with permission from the State and co-managers the City of Bordentown and D&R Greenway.  Dr. Druckenbrod is preparing to publish a book on his work and will reveal previously unknown facts. This will be a unique opportunity to hear about his discoveries first-hand.  Please send RSVP’s to info@drgreenway.org for the Dec. 10 Talk About Trees lecture.

Photo – Welcome to the Holiday Open House at the Discovery Center

These two events, the Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 2, and the “Talk about Trees” on Sunday, Dec. 10, celebrate the Discovery Center’s new weekend visitor hours. Beginning in December, the Discovery Center will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 Noon – 4 p.m. every weekend. The Discovery Center will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Special holiday hours have been added on Dec. 26 – 27 to accommodate families who are home for the holidays.

Layers of history are represented at the Discovery Center.  Visitors learn the preservation story and about the land’s Lenape inhabitants in the Peoples Room. The Crown Jewels Gallery showcases special features of Point Breeze, seen as the “crown jewels” that can be found on the land, in reference to Bonaparte’s escape as King of Spain from where he is reputed to have taken the Crown Jewels to support his lifestyle in exile. Climbing a staircase to the second floor, visitors pass beneath an Italian glass chandelier that symbolizes Joseph and his brother Napoleon Bonaparte’s Italian ancestry and birth on the island of Corsica.

In the Walk Through Time Room, visitors view an 1819 painting of Jospeh Bonaparte, thanks to the family of Louis Mailliard, his lifelong confidant and Secretary. Turing to the Natural World room, stories focus on nature and the Delaware River, including the nearly extinct sturgeon and birds seen by John James Audubon and ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte.

Admission to the Discovery Center at Point Breeze is free.  A suggested donation of $10 provides the donor with a souvenir magnet and supports programs and exhibits. RSVP to info@drgreenway.org.

Beginning in December, the new open hours for visitors will be Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon- 4 p.m.  A special holiday lecture, Talk about Trees, will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 1 p.m. during Visitor Hours. Holiday hours include the afternoons of Dec. 26 – 27.

The Discovery Center will be closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Group tours may be scheduled on weekdays by appointment. Information is available at www.drgreenway.org, or by calling D&R Greenway at 609-924-4646. RSVP to info@drgreenway.org.
