Applications now open for Mercer County Student Internship Program

MERCER COUNTY — Applications are now open for the 2024 Mercer County Student Internship Program.

High school and college students who live, or attend school, in Mercer County may apply to a wide range of full-time and part-time internship positions. Internship opportunities are available over the summer from June through Labor Day, with a limited number of spots also available over the Winter Break and Spring Break periods.

“I’m excited for the Mercer County Student Internship Program to return this year,” said County Executive Dan Benson. “These positions offer us an opportunity to engage our next generation of leaders in the important work of county government. We all benefit from the energy and enthusiasm that they bring to the work.”

Students in the program will have the opportunity to serve the public by assisting the core day-to-day work of a department or division within the Mercer County government, while acquiring valuable experience for their future careers. Participants will also benefit from a series of activities planned by the Office of Personnel, curated to teach valuable skills, enhance workforce preparedness, and provide information about career paths in public service.

Interested students can visit the Mercer County website to apply, find information on the program, and read details on available positions.

College students will be paid $17/hour and high school students will earn $15.14/hour. All applicants must be at least 15 years of age. Students seeking to earn credits for their college or university have the option of working without pay.

The AACCNJ announces Malcolm Jenkins as Juneteenth Black Business 2024 Expo speaker

Retired NFL Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist Malcolm Jenkins will join John Harmon in a conversation about his career and professional journey as an entrepreneur.

 

 

TRENTON, N.J. – The African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) announced Malcolm Jenkins as the Keynote Speaker, for the Juneteenth Black Business 2024 Expo, which will be held at Fairleigh Dickinson University – Metropolitan Campus Teaneck, N.J., on June 13, 2024, from 9 a.m. to  4 p.m.

New Jersey native Malcolm Jenkin is a 13-year NFL veteran, two-time Super Bowl champion, three-time Pro-Bowl honoree, NFLPA Executive Committee Board Member, entrepreneur, philanthropist, executive director, published author, an Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee, CNN Contributor, and advocate for social justice.

Jenkins created MALCOLM INC., a holding company for the various business verticals he co-founded; LISTEN UP MEDIA, a multimedia production company with the mission to showcase and distribute content that creates social awareness around systemic issues in society; BROAD STREET VENTURES, a $10 million investment vehicle funded entirely by Black and Brown investors including a group of fellow NFL players; DISRUPT FOODS, a multi-unit franchise developer and operator of 20+ quick service restaurants aiming to level the economic playing field for Blacks and Hispanics through Franchise Ownership; and DAMARI, a custom clothing company which includes ready-to-wear and made-to-measure men and women suits. Mercer County announces second phase of zero-interest rate loans to businesses through a partnership with the UCEDC

MERCER COUNTY — Mercer County Exec. Dan Benson and the Board of County Commissioners are excited to announce that the County will partner for a second phase with UCEDC to establish a 0% Interest Loan Program for small businesses in Mercer County.

Dedicating an additional $240,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, to be administered through the Mercer County Office of Economic Development, the program will allow Mercer County businesses to apply for affordable access to capital. The UCEDC will provide loans on a first-come, first-served basis utilizing current lending products and capital.

“Small businesses represent the life-blood of our local economy here in Mercer County, “said Mercer County Exec. Benson.

“In extending our interest-free loan program we are excited to give our Mercer County small businesses a meaningful jolt to spur economic development.”

“We are thrilled that Mercer County is extending UCEDC’s contract, leveraging another $500K in interest-free loans. This will provide more assistance to entrepreneurs, building on the $750K we’ve already distributed through our partnership. It’s a privilege to contribute to the success of Mercer County small businesses and make a positive impact on local communities in New Jersey,” said UCEDC President Adam Farrah.

The program will require the following:

  • Businesses must be located in Mercer County, registered with the State of New Jersey and must have been formed on or before September 1, 2019.
  • Businesses must have 30 full-time equivalent employees or less at time of application and have less than $10 million in annual gross revenue based on most recent tax return.
  • Loans will range from $10,000 to $20,000.
  • Loans will be offered at 0% interest, with a five-year repayment term.
  • Funds can be used for working capital, inventory, or purchases of furniture and equipment.
  • No collateral requirements, pre-payment penalties, processing, closing, or application fees will be required.
  • Personal guarantees of the significant owners of the business (10% or greater) are required.
  • Applicants must not have had a bankruptcy or significant charge-offs within the most recent 3-year period.

Based on the maximum loan amount of $20,000 and the parameters above, Mercer County will provide funding to approximately 26 businesses in the target market.

Passage Theatre 2024 Gala: Our biggest and best yet!

On Saturday, April 6, Passage Theatre held its Annual Gala at the Trenton Country Club, where it was a great success, with over 175 guests.

 

They say this year’s Gala was the biggest event in Passage history, and that they thank their patrons and donors.

Passage honored Trenton’s own Phillip McConnell with the Artisan Emerging Award, Maria Richardson with the Patron of the Arts Excellence Award, and the Poor Righteous Teachers with the Cultural Leader Award.

 

The evening’s highlight was a live performance by Wise Intelligent & Culture Freedom, of the Poor Righteous Teachers. It was an epic and incredible night, celebrating the large and supportive community around Passage Theatre.

County Exec. Benson releases 100-day accomplishments since his office election

MERCER COUNTY — It has been 100 days since Mercer County Executive Dan Benson was sworn into office on Jan. 1,  2024.

“When we took office, the county faced considerable challenges. The 2022 county audit wasn’t complete, several key financial statements needed corrections, and a key county bond was near its expiration. In our first 100 days, we have put Mercer County on stable footing. We have an experienced team that has restored competence and professionalism to Mercer County government,” said County Executive Benson.

Benson immediately hired a qualified and experienced staff, led by Christopher Marion as County Administrator, Sharon Shinkle Gardner as Chief of Staff, Taraun Tice McKnight and Ana Montero as Deputy Administrators, and Nick Trasente as Chief Financial Officer. In the first 50 days, this team reorganized Mercer County government, making the following changes:

  • County Administrator Marion will oversee Buildings & Grounds, Corrections, Trenton-Mercer Airport, the Mercer County Library System, and the Joint Insurance Fund
  • Deputy Administrator Tice McKnight will oversee Human Services, Mercer County Office of Training and Employment Services (One-Stop Career Center), Housing, and Veterans Affairs
  • Deputy Administrator Montero will oversee a new joint department of Public Health and Safety, including the Office of Emergency Management and Emergency Communications

“While working to fix the county’s finances, we have also laid the foundation for the work ahead. We’ve improved accessibility, fostered greater collaboration with our municipalities, increased transparency to public contracting, modernized our County Code, and ensured our administration is both diverse and transparent,” said County Executive Benson.

Highlights of the Benson Administration’s first 100 days in office include:

  • Completed the long overdue 2022 Mercer County Audit
  • Shared updates on IRS penalties incurred from the last administration with the Board of Commissioners
  • Drafted initial revisions to the Mercer County Code, the first set of revisions in over ten years
  • Completed an April 4th bond note sale rolling over the $150+ million sale from the last administration, at a lower interest rate, while maintaining our bond rating
  • Worked with our new CFO and financial consultants to recreate and identify missing or incorrect County financial documents
  • Obtained a $70,000 grant to install hearing induction loops to assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing at select county facilities
  • Launched a new round of zero-interest loans for local small businesses
  • Provided funding to help Hamilton Township buy and preserve Kuser Woods
  • Completed a comprehensive After Action Review of Mercer County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Appointed a diverse group of Mercer residents to numerous Boards and Commissions

Benson added, “There’s a lot of work still ahead, but we are committed to making sure Mercer County government works for everyone. We will do whatever it takes to make that pledge a reality.”

  • Hiring a new Office of Emergency Management Director
  • Establishing a Division of Tourism & Travel in Economic Development
  • Creating a Mercer County Office of LGBTQIA+ Services within Human Services
  • Breaking ground on the Trenton-Mercer Airport Firehouse (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting facility)
  • Preparing the 2024 Mercer County Budget for adoption
  • Auditing Mercer County Information Technology Systems
  • Installing Wi-Fi at Trenton-Mercer Airport
  • Completing an audit of Mercer County Parks System.
  • Conducting a Corrections Facility Assessment
  • Hosting Bi-Annual Legislative Delegation meetings to discuss Mercer County’s priorities

Matt Rife sets two Netflix comedy specials, including first full-length crowd work show

More Matt Rife is coming to Netflix.

 

Following his comedy special “Natural Selection” in November 2023, Rife will make two more specials at Netflix. The first in Rife’s two-special deal is set to release later this year. It will be Netflix’s first-ever, full-length crowd work special. It will shoot at The Comedy Zone in Charlotte, N.C., and will be directed by Erik Griffin. Irony Point will produce, along with Rife and his manager Christina Shams as executive producers.

 

Rife’s “Natural Selection,” brought in more than 10 million views in the first few weeks of its release along with reaching the Global Top 10 in 42 countries. Prior to his Netflix hit, Rife released three YouTube specials, which he self-produced and distributed, that now sit at 43 million views.

 

The comedian is also a social media star after his career grew by going viral times on TikTok and having a combined 33 million followers and 2 billion views across all platforms. Last year, Rife broke Ticketmaster due to high demand for ticket sales to “The ProbleMATTic World Tour.” The tour included four sold-out shows at Dolby Theater, six nights at Radio City Music Hall and five sold-out shows at Mohegan Sun Area. While his “ProbleMATTic World Tour” is still going strong, there are more stops to come in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

 

Rife returns to Los Angeles to headline The Hollywood Bowl on May 8 for the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, which will be his first-ever appearance.

Ronald D. Moore to receive the Outstanding Television Writer Award at the 2024 Austin Film Festival

The Austin Film Festival (AFF) has announced Ronald D. Moore as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Television Writer Award for his prolific impact on the world of television and his work on celebrated science fiction and fantasy series such as “For All Mankind,” “Outlander” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

 

“I’m very honored,” Moore told Variety over the phone. “It’s great when your work is recognized and when a renowned organization like the Austin Film Festival chooses to do something like this. It’s amazing. I’m just very humbled by it all.”

 

Moore will receive the award at the Festival Awards Luncheon during AFF’s Writers Conference, which takes place Oct. 24-27. Two panels, “A Conversation with Ronald D. Moore” and “Script To Screen: Battlestar Galactica,” are also scheduled for the event.

 

“It’s a moment to stop and look around,” Moore said of his honor. “It’s always amazing when you get to the mountaintop — and you’re not always on the mountaintop — so when you get there, it’s cool to stop and take a gander, to look around and really enjoy it. I’ve been very lucky, and I’ve had an amazing run of different shows and worked with a lot of great people. Something like this reminds you to enjoy it. It’s been an amazing journey and it’s really cool.”

 

Moore got his break in the industry as a staff writer for “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” for which he wrote 27 episodes, including the award-winning two-hour series finale. In 1994, Moore scored his first Emmy nomination and joined the staff of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as a supervising producer. He was promoted to co-executive producer the following year.

 

In 2003, Moore re-imaged the “Battlestar Galactica” series, based on the original, which aired in the late 1970s. He would serve as showrunner and executive producer on the sci-fi drama, which aired for four seasons. During its historic run, “Battlestar Galactica” received a Peabody award and an Emmy nomination for best writing in a dramatic series and was selected as a top television program by the American Film Institute in 2005 and 2006.

 

Through his company Tall Ship productions, Moore is currently producing the Golden Globe-nominated series “Outlander” for Starz and “For All Mankind” on Apple TV+. Moore scored an overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television in 2020 where he is developing new series for the studio.

AM Best to participate and exhibit at RIMS’ 2024 RISKWORLD Conference

Donald Trump wanted Ivanka to replace him on ‘The Apprentice’

When Donald Trump left his seat in the boardroom as the star of his long-running NBC reality series “The Apprentice” in 2015, in order to run for president of the United States, he had a clear successor in mind.

 

“I said, ‘The best person to hire would be Ivanka Trump,’” Donald Trump says.

 

“I didn’t press it. But I felt Ivanka would have been by far the best person you could hire.”

 

Trump shares this revelation in a new book about his years as a reality star, “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass,” written by Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh.

 

The book peels back the curtain on how Trump’s decade playing an all-knowing mogul on TV shaped his image as a politician, ultimately catapulting him to the White House.

 

“Apprentice in Wonderland” is based on unprecedented access and hours of interviews with Trump after he left the White House in January 2021— as well as his original boardroom advisers George Ross and Carolyn Kepcher, NBC executives and dozens of former contestants. Setoodeh is the author of the 2019 best-selling book “Ladies Who Punch: The Explosive Inside Story of ‘The View.’”

 

When “The Apprentice” premiered in January 2004, it became an overnight sensation, reaching more than 20 million viewers an episode in its first season. More importantly, the series, created by Mark Burnett,turned Trump into a beloved national figure. On TV, Trump was a savvy businessman, who judged contestants seeking his approval in a competitive job search and dismissed those who didn’t measure up with his ubiquitous catchphrase, “You’re fired!”

Eventually, the show added more star power in the form of contestants in “The Celebrity Apprentice,” which had everyone from Joan Rivers to Piers Morgan competing for Trump’s approval in tasks for charity. Trump starred in 14 seasons of “The Apprentice” and its spinoff before exiting reality TV, and he was also credited as the series’ executive producer.

“NBC didn’t like it, because it became like a family thing,” Trump says in the book about his proposal to have Ivanka replace him. “But I said, ‘There’s nobody you’re going to hire that will come even close to Ivanka.’ They said, ‘Huh…’ And then they came back with Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

 

Schwarzenegger replaced Trump as host of “The New Celebrity Apprentice,” which premiered in January 2017, before Trump’s inauguration, and was canceled after one season due to lackluster ratings.

As part of Trump’s pitch for an Ivanka version of “The Apprentice,” Eric and Don Trump Jr. would have joined their sister on TV as boardroom advisers. The trio had been a regular presence on the show for years, appearing by their father’s side in later seasons to help him evaluate the contestants.

“It was going to be the three of us,” Eric Trump says in the book. “There were talks for a little while about it.”

In the end, this continuation of “The Apprentice” led by Ivanka didn’t come together, since NBC cut ties with Donald Trump when he ran for president and immediately made derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants in July 2015.

Instead, Trump’s grown-up children joined him on the campaign trail. “I think it’s pretty hard to say we’re going to run with reality TV in a time when you’re talking about ending nuclear proliferation around the world,” Eric says in the book. “I’m not sure the two could have worked in tandem.”
