Mercer plans COVID vaccine clinic for kids 6 months to 5 years

Mercer County’s Division of Public Health will offer COVID-19 vaccines to children 6 months to 5 years at a special vaccination clinic on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, announced Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends vaccinating all children in the age group with one of two separate COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech.

“Parents of very young children have expressed their concern about potentially exposing their unvaccinated baby or toddler to the virus in congregate settings such as daycare centers and social gatherings,” Mr. Hughes said. “For parents who have anxiously waited, we are pleased to now be able to offer these FDA-approved vaccines at our county-run clinic.”

County’s electric vehicle charging stations up and running

he electric vehicle (EV) charging stations that the County of Mercer has installed at 11 of its facilities are now open and available for public use, County Executive Brian M. Hughes announced.

“The availability of additional charging stations around Mercer County will benefit electric vehicle owners and, we hope, help reduce the ‘range anxiety’ that might prevent other consumers from investing in electric vehicles,” Mr. Hughes said. “This initiative will also help raise awareness about the environmental benefits of gasoline alternatives as we further our commitment to increasing sustainable practices throughout the County.”

County donates reusable bags to area agencies

In response to New Jersey’s new progressive bag ban, Mercer County handed out the majority of its first round of 10,000 bags to local agencies serving the most vulnerable citizens. Pictured with County Executive Brian M. Hughes is Joyce E. Campbell, Executive Director of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). Ms. Campbell told Mr. Hughes that the reusable bags will be beneficial to visitors and clients at TASK, whether they are used to carry goods home from the facility or to use for shopping elsewhere where they might otherwise incur a bag fee.

Other agencies receiving bags were Arm in Arm, Rise, HomeFront, Jewish Family and Children Services, Mercer Street Friends, Ginny’s Pantry at Christ Presbyterian Church, CYO of Bromley Food Pantry, East Trenton Collaborative – Urban Promise Trenton, Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen at St. Mary’s Church, Sacred Heart Church, and Trinity Episcopal Church.

The new law is meant to prevent litter and encourages the use of reusable bags by phasing out single-use plastic and paper bags.

Mercer offers fresh-produce vouchers to qualifying older adults

The Mercer County Office on Aging/Aging & Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) is accepting applications for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, which provides vouchers for the purchase of fresh, nutritious, unprepared foods such as fruits, vegetables and herbs to low-income older adults.

“With foods provided from authorized farmers, the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program not only helps increase the nutritional health of our communities, but also increases the demand for locally grown produce and boosts the income of farmers who produce and sell locally grown products,” said County Executive Brian M. Hughes. Last year, the Office on Aging/Aging & Disability Resource Connection distributed vouchers to 1,430 Mercer County older adults, he added.

(609) 989-3027 | williamtrenthouse.org

William Trent, the Philadelphia merchant who bought 1,000 acres at the Falls of the Delaware in 1714 and established Trent’s Town there, had a son who was his namesake. The younger William Trent was commissioned by the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia to establish a fort at the Forks of the Ohio, near present-day Pittsburgh, to defend British interests. After the War in 1769 he sailed to England to petition for recompense for funds expended in that cause. Upon returning in the summer of 1775, he learned of fighting in Massachusetts and the colonies in an uproar. With the Revolutionary War looming closer to New Jersey, Trent would propose a new colony, operate a ferry business and plantation in south Trenton, and finally make the decision between King and country.

Jason Cherry will describe the role that William Trent’s son and the Lower Ferry played in the Revolutionary War, drawing on his continuing research into the life and times of the younger Trent.

Arthur Finkle, chair of the Trenton Jewish Historical Society, will describe the history of the Russian Jewish community in the Trent House neighborhood in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
While doing archival research for the society, Mr. Finkle, whose roots in Trenton reach back three generations, realized there was no fully documented work on the city’s Jewish history — so he wrote one. The book that grew out of his studies, Trenton’s Jews: Beginning, Adaptation and Achieving the American Dream, was published in 2016 by Hadassa Word Press.

This free program will be offered both in-person in the Visitor Center at the William Trent House Museum, 15 Market Street, Trenton (across from the Hughes Justice Complex) and via Zoom at https://tinyurl.com/TrentonJews.

Since the introduction of photographic portrait studios in 1840, photographs have been among the most treasured of family records. While most are long-lasting when stored optimally in archives, they are all too often prone to fading and discoloration when stored in  the home environment. In this lecture, photographer and archivist Gary Saretzky will provide guidance on how to extend the life of family photographs so that they can be passed down to future generations. The lecture includes examples of how old photographs can be enhanced or restored in the computer after digitization.

Virtual Poetry Circle

The Mercer County Library, Lawrence Headquarters Branch
2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville
(609) 883-8294 | mcl.org

Many people were inspired by Amanda Gorman’s poetry reciting at President Joe Biden’s Inauguration. When a poem is read in front of a worldwide audience through television and the internet, it is a high-profile example of a 21st-century “occasional poem”. When it gives hope to all, unites people from left and right, and has the power to heal different kinds of wounds, it is truly as what the great German poet Goethe declared – “Occasional Poetry is the highest kind.” Many great occasional poems commemorate events, mark history and celebrate life. Come and join our MCLS poetry circle discussion to learn more occasional poems from Walt Whitman, Maya Angelou, Seamus Heaney, Carol Ann Duffy, W. H. Auden, Carl Sandberg, Stanley Kunitz, and Bob Dylan. Sharon, a librarian for the Lawrence Branch, will lead the discussion.

Noel Coward’s totally-irresistible and semi-autobiographical comedy follows a self-obsessed actor in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Freely indulging his considerable appetite for wine, women and sleeping late, the theatre’s favorite leading man suddenly finds himself caught between fawning ingénues, crazed playwrights, secret trysts and unexpected twists.  We welcome The MTM Players to the Kelsey Theatre family as they bring you this crazy British farce.  BUY TICKETS NOW!

JUNE 10 & 17, 8 p.m.
JUNE 11 & 18, 2 p.m.
JUNE 12 & 19, 2 p.m.
Two Gentlemen Of Verona

Kelsey Theatre

(609) 570-3333 | kelsey.mccc.edu

Young Proteus only has eyes for his hometown sweetheart, Julia. But one look at the beautiful Silvia on a trip to Milan changes everything. Now he’s smitten with his best friend’s lover, but Julia has no intention of going away quietly. Events spin out of control as romantic rivals face off in this wild comic tale. Shakespeare 70’s staging of The Bard’s comic adventure brings out all the usual suspects: young love, hilarious servants, and disguised genders. And did we mention a clever dog?

Among her favorite subjects—and the central theme of the exhibition—is the night sky.

NOW – NOVEMBER 20
Stepping Into Tomorrow/ TRANSITional Art Project Exhibition

Artworks Trenton
19 Everett Alley, Trenton
(609) 394-9436 | artworkstrenton.org

Stepping Into Tomorrow was funded by a 2020 Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Grant. Trenton is one of 16 municipalities nationwide to receive funding in 2020 from Bloomberg Philanthropies for asphalt art projects. Request for Proposals was posted and three semi-finalists were selected to show their designs at a Virtual Public Presentation. George Bates’ design was selected and planning quickly took place for road closures, materials, and community involvement. After 16 hours on September 4th & 5th, 2021, George Bates along with a team of artists, community members, students, and volunteers, installed the final design for the Stepping Into Tomorrow Asphalt Art Project at the Trenton Transit Center (the intersection of South Clinton Avenue and Barlow Street/Raoul Wallenberg Avenue). This project is a partnership between Artworks Trenton and The City of Trenton, made possible through funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Thank you also to NJ Transit and New Jersey Council on the Arts for participating in the Stepping Into Tomorrow Asphalt Art Project through your TRANSTional Art Project installed at the same intersection.

About the Artist:

Born in Newark, NJ and currently based in Ocean, NJ, George Bates’ public art projects are a direct outgrowth of his interest in exploring the plastic nature of systems, communities, complexities, aesthetics, and the realities and satisfactions of societal living in relation to art. His public art projects for the NYC MTA can be seen at the 36th Street, Rockaway, Queens and Central Avenue, Bushwick, Brooklyn subway stations completed respectively in hand painted and fired glass, and laser cut stainless steel. His work can also be seen all along the North Metro Line light-rail in Aurora, CO and a variety of public projects throughout the United States.

In conjunction with the “Stepping Into Tomorrow” Asphalt Art Project at the Trenton Transit Center, NJ Transit and NJSCA will be installing their “TRANSITional Art Project” outside of the Trenton Transit Center on August 28th.  NJ Transit and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are pleased to present the TRANSITional Art Project to the Trenton Transit Station. This project includes 10 banners hung around the exterior of the building and 5 pieces installed within the bus shelters created by local New Jersey artists, as well as a brand new bike rack welded from upcycled bike parts.

West Airport Road Project – Migrant and Resident African American Contributions to Central New Jersey

The 1719 William Trent House Museum
15 Market Street, Trenton
(609) 989-3027 | williamtrenthouse.org

The Trent House Association in partnership with the Hightstown-East Windsor Historical Society presents a talk on the West Airport Road Project on Sunday, November 7, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. This is a free program offered both in-person at the Trent House Museum Visitor Center and virtually on Zoom. Pre-register on Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/westairportroad. Join via Zoom at https://tinyurl.com/wairportrd.

The West Airport Road Project began with the rediscovery of a 1997 newspaper article on George Sumbry, an African American veteran of World War II who returned to the Hightstown-East Windsor area and established a grocery store on Airport Road. Mr. Sumbry knew the area from his teenage years when he and his brother found work there after leaving Alabama in 1929. His is the story of many other African Americans who left the South and found work in the North during the Great Migration.

“Slice of Life” Quilt Art Celebrates 300 Years of Hightstown History

Hightstown Woman’s Club
Main Street, Hightstown
https://www.facebook.com/HightstownWomansClub

Ever wonder what your day-to-day life would be like if you lived 100 years ago? 200 years ago? How about 300? The Hightstown Woman’s Club did, and created a “Slice of Life” Art Quilt to commemorate 300 years of living in Hightstown.  On Sunday, November 14th at 2 PM, they will be presenting this art quilt to the Borough officials at the historic Fire House event room, 140 North Main Street.

At the event, the Woman’s Club CIP Committee will reveal the two-year process that brought them to the spectacular finished product. This was a community event, with 26 makers from Hightstown and East Windsor participating in a mixed-media artform. An accompanying book has been produced with a rich historic compilation of the art quilt subjects, and will be available to view and purchase in time for the holidays.

The commemorative quilt colorfully illustrates the area’s history. Come learn what drove people to this area, see some of the businesses that helped them survive, and hear about the challenges and successes they experienced throughout the years.  What did this area look like when the Native Americans lived here? When and how did our population begin to grow and become diverse? Why did some businesses prosper while others failed? What was daily life like for the kids?

OCTOBER 9 – NOVEMBER 14
Trenton’s Treasurers

Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie
Cadwalader Park, Trenton
(609) 989-1191 | ellarslie.org

We celebrate the lives and the work of two of Trenton’s most iconic artists, Marge Chavooshian and Robert Sakson. They documented the lives and the places where they resided as well as the surrounding areas and beyond. Howell Farm and Washington Crossing, PA, were favorites of Bob Sakson, depicting life on the farm and the history of Washington’s famous crossing and the sites that survive today. Travels to far-away countries expanded Marge Chavooshian views and her palette with a fresh eye.

Even though they were contemporary Trenton artists and lived only a mile apart, they seldom painted together. However, their work was shown in many of the same local exhibitions as well as regional shows where they received many awards, locally as well as nationally. In this exhibition we can appreciate the work of these talented, prolific artists with their fresh techniques. Sometimes spontaneous … sometimes with minute detail, they were both masters of the watercolor genre.

INDOOR PROGRAM: The True Story of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Mercer County Library
Ewing Branch 61 Scotch Road, Ewing
(609) 882-3148 | mcl.org

The residents of Sleepy Hollow believed the Headless Horseman to have been a Hessian. The Hessians were soldiers from Northern Germany who were leased from German princes to fight for the British in the Revolutionary War. Although six German princes rented out their troops to the British, the Hessians, from Hesse-Kassel in Hesse were the most numerous and most important, making up about 17,000 of the 30,000 total troops sent. Join Historical Reenactor and lecturer Michael Jesberger for a program on one of America’s oldest short stories based on real events that took place in the Hudson Valley of New York during the American Revolution.

Wheat Planting

 Howell Living History Farm
70 Woodens Lane, Titusville
(609) 737-3299 | howellfarm.org

Wheat planting is a delicate operation, and the soil has to be just right to plant on schedule…but the work of threshing, grinding, and milling wheat for flour or animal feed goes on rain or shine.

Join farmers in the barn to thresh wheat, by the woodshed—where you can lend a hand cutting firewood for the kitchen stove—and outside the farmhouse to help churn butter for whole wheat bread made with Howell Farm wheat. As a ‘thank you’ for your help, you’ll receive a sample of homemade bread, and a recipe to make your own at home!

OCTOBER 9, 10 am
Barn Auction

Howell Living History Farm
70 Woodens Lane, Titusville
(609) 737-3299 | howellfarm.org

Get out your husking peg…it’s time to pick corn! With more than 120,000 ears to pick, farmers could use your hand filling a horse-drawn wagon with field corn—some of which will be used to feed animals in the Mercer County Wildlife Center’s rehabilitation program. Next, head to the barn to help shell and grind corn for Howell Farm’s animals…or the farmhouse to make a batch of cornbread from freshly-ground cornmeal.

Planting and pruning is only finished when the Osage orange hedgerow is ‘horse high and hog tight.’ Help farmers trim these natural fences, and gather fallen oranges for use in the farmhouse basement…where their scent is thought to discourage insects and spiders from taking up residence.

Discover evidence of Pleasant Valley’s historic landscape by joining farmers for hedgerow walks and talks, and learn about a project to map the Osage orange hedgerows of Mercer County.

Still Life is an art form that centers inanimate subjects like products, tabletop, foods and found objects, challenging the artist to create an image that makes familiar objects compelling to the viewer. The ability to compose the scene instead of capturing a moment affords the photographer control and creative potential. At the same time, experimenting with lighting, mood, arrangements and composition pertains to every photographic endeavor. Mastering Still Life photography is an excellent way to sharpen general skills and comprises an essential part of a photographer’s portfolio.
