Cintas’ LED lighting transition nears completion

LEDs, other facility-related energy-reduction projects are part of the company’s ambition to achieve Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050

CINCINNATI — (BUSINESS WIRE) — $CTASCintas Corporation (Nasdaq: CTAS) is nearing completion of a multi-year companywide LED lighting transition project to help reduce facility-focused energy use and support the company along its Path to Net Zero.

Cintas’ 475 facilities throughout the United States and Canada fulfill the needs of its four business divisions. These field locations, distribution centers and corporate facilities combine for about 23 million square feet of space that requires heating, cooling and appropriate lighting.

Cintas identified an opportunity to decrease energy use by installing LED lights at its older, more energy-intensive locations, and initiated the company-wide LED transition project in FY’19.

Cintas’ Quality and Engineering Team completed LED installations at more than 125 locations by the end of the company’s fiscal year 2022, and entered the current fiscal year with fewer than 50 target facilities remaining in the current phase.

“We’ve already installed LED lighting in over 6 million square feet of space in our facilities, which is poised to reduce our annual energy use by almost 23.3 million kilowatt hours going forward,” said Christy Nageleisen, Cintas’ Vice President of ESG.

More than 27,000 incandescent and fluorescent lighting fixtures have been swapped out, and the energy savings generated by the LEDs represents more than 16,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions averted annually.

> VIDEO (YouTube): Cintas Uses LED Lighting Conversions to Reduce Energy Requirements

A Strategic Plan

The lighting transition project is part of Cintas’ strategic ambition to achieve Net Zero GHG emissions by 2050.

“We’re not waiting until 2050 to start,” said Mark Bolen, Cintas Vice President of Quality & Engineering. “We’re looking at all avenues to see where it makes the most sense, where our dollar has the best return, and it’s not just lighting. It’s being better environmental stewards.”

Cintas reduced its energy consumption intensity by 7.9% from FY’21 to FY’22, which included the expanding impact of the LED lighting transition project.

A Comprehensive Approach

Cintas’ facility-focused energy reductions go beyond LED lighting conversions.

“Sustainability and energy efficiency plays a key role for us, primarily because our products are delicate and they require a lot of attention that we provide to our customers,” Bolen said. “Engineering is constantly looking at ways to find equipment that is more reliable – more energy efficient – to ultimately reduce our reliance on energy.”

To that end, Cintas is exploring opportunities to test solar technology. Working with the state of New Jersey, Cintas identified the opportunity to install its first solar-powered system at the company’s Rental location in Piscataway, N.J.

The project is underway and is expected to be fully installed and operational in the late spring of 2023. Once online and connected to the energy grid, Cintas’ first solar system installation will allow the company to evaluate its year-round performance and compare the costs with traditional utility-based energy sources.

Cintas’ Engineering Team and its Facility Team area also evaluating other energy- and water-reduction capabilities for its existing and future facilities.

Some Cintas facilities currently have various energy-reduction technologies installed, including entrances with multiple doors, timing mechanisms on the HVAC and lighting systems, water-flow reducers and thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofs and ceilings made of lighter-colored materials to reflect radiant heat.

Additionally, all new Cintas buildings constructed since 2017 have been built with LED lighting systems installed. This includes external LED lighting configurations that create zero light spillage (also known as photometric pollution) at Cintas’ property boundaries.

As a result of the Path to Net Zero and the company’s overall Operational Excellence and Reliability initiatives, Cintas is also investigating the potential benefits of standardizing facility plans that incorporate a consistent set of energy-reducing technologies across all Cintas operations.

Oticon celebrates winners of the Annual Oticon Focus on People Awards

12 inspiring individuals recognized for empowering and advocating for people with hearing loss

SOMERSET, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — #FOPOticon, Inc. announced the winners of the 2022 Oticon Focus on People Awards, a national program dedicated to honoring outstanding individuals who have made a positive impact on the hearing loss community. Thousands of people from around the world voted during Fall 2022 to determine this year’s winners in four categories.

The 2022 first place winners are:

  • Student: Erin Cembrale of Dunedin, Florida views her hearing loss as a strength that motivates her to try harder and never give up. This commitment has fueled a successful soccer career. Since age 3, Erin has played for a variety of club, high school and college teams, including the U.S. Deaf Women’s National Team (USDWNT), with whom she won gold in the 2022 Deaflympics in Brazil. This year, she will travel to Korea with the USDWNT to compete in the World Cup. Off the field, Erin inspires and mentors young soccer players with disabilities.
  • Adult: Zina Jawadi of Los Altos Hills, California is an advocate for people with hearing loss among medical professionals. She believes accommodations are essential in establishing trust, formulating a diagnosis, creating an effective treatment plan, and ensuring patients play an active role in their health. A medical student herself, Zina is the youngest ever member of the Hearing Loss Association of America’s Board of Directors. Her long-term goal is to increase representation of people with hearing loss in medicine and to address accessibility barriers for people with hearing loss and with disabilities more broadly. Zina plans to donate all prizes, including the hearing aids, from this award to the Hearing Loss Association of America.
  • Advocacy: Gregory Scott of New York, New York drew on his personal experiences with hearing loss to create SoundPrint, a crowdsourcing app that enables anyone to measure and report the sound levels in bars and restaurants. SoundPrint serves as an important free resource for people with and without hearing loss who are looking for quieter venues that make conversation easier. Additionally, the SoundPrint database is shared with venue managers, public health researchers, and hearing health advocates to let them know people care about noise.
  • Practitioner: Jamie Marotto of Fairfield, Connecticut is the Director of the Sacred Heart University (SHU) Undergraduate Program in Communication Disorders and Director of the Audiology Clinic. She knows the value of integrating classroom teachings with clinical experience, especially when caring for patients in underserved communities. In the clinic, students learn how evaluating and treating hearing loss across a lifespan can improve a patient’s ability to work, interact socially and minimize health risks associated with hearing loss. To further drive home the importance of using their knowledge and skills to give back, Dr. Marotto leads students on an annual service-learning trip to Guatemala to provide hearing-related services and hearing aid fittings to in-need children and adults.

“From the youngest students to accomplished professionals and global brands, the winners of this year’s Oticon Focus on People Awards are redefining perceptions of hearing loss, encouraging inclusivity, and empowering others around them,” said Nancy Palmere Mucha, Director of Consumer Marketing and Public Relations for Oticon, Inc. “Through their leadership, advocacy, and resilience, they are inspiring change and making the world a better place for people with hearing loss.”

As part of this year’s program, Oticon has also recognized Barbie with Hearing Aids and leading toy manufacturer Mattel with a special award for the brand’s commitment to creating dolls with a variety of looks to represent everyone. The brand unveiled Barbie with Hearing Aids in 2022 as part of their ongoing efforts to amplify diversity and inclusion.

“The Barbie brand believes in the power of representation, and we are committed to continuing to introduce dolls, like Barbie with Hearing Aids, that reflect the diversity children see in the world around them,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel. “It’s important for young people to see themselves reflected in our products. And it’s equally important to encourage children to play with dolls that may not resemble them to help them understand and celebrate the importance of inclusion.”

The 2022 Oticon Focus on People Award winners were revealed on February 25 during the Oticon Next Conference, a gathering of hearing care professionals from around the country. As part of the event, Mattel donated more than 950 Barbie with Hearing Aids dolls to the hearing care professionals in attendance, equipping them with a valuable tool to connect with patients.

Established in 1997, the Oticon Focus on People Awards program has honored more than 300 outstanding individuals throughout the United States. This year’s second and third place winners are:

  • Student — Lauren Harris of Knoxville, Tennessee; Mercy Botchway of Everett, Massachusetts
  • Adult — Meaghan Thomas of Nashville, Tennessee; Shirley Forpe of Palatine, Illinois
  • Advocacy — Renee Polanco Lucerno of Culver City, California; Shanna Groves of Olathe, Kansas
  • Practitioner — Dawn Heiman of Woodridge, Illinois; Mary Frintner of Burbank, California

First place winners received a $1,000 prize as well as a $1,000 donation from Oticon to the non-profit organization of their choice. In addition, first place winners in the Student, Adult, and Advocacy categories received a pair of Oticon hearing aids.

Mercer County Exec. Hughes, Clerk Sollami Covello recently lead 2023 Black History Month celebration

Black history is American history

To a packed room, Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes and County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello co-hosted Mercer’s Annual Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 24.

Participants joined in song, storytelling and the sharing of history of African Americans and their contributions to the United States, during the event held at the McDade Administration Building Cafe.

This year’s special guests were members of the families of Gladys Hedgepeth and Berline Williams. Kyle Hedgepeth enraptured the audience with an accounting of his family’s part in the landmark legal case.

He recounted that Gladys Hedgepeth and Berline Williams of Trenton filed suit against the Trenton School Board when their children were refused admission to the newly built Junior High School No. 2. The new school was only a few blocks from their homes in the Wilbur section of the City, while the segregated Lincoln School was 2 miles away. With the assistance of the NAACP, Hedgepeth and Williams successfully fought the school district’s segregationist policy, and the landmark New Jersey Supreme Court case bears their names.

The case became a precedent for the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 and continued to influence many Affirmative Action and equal opportunity policies in New Jersey’s education system, as well as the eradication of laws supporting discrimination in New Jersey.

In addition to Clerk Sollami Covello and Mr. Hughes, others who spoke included Jocelyn White, retired Trenton educator; the Rev. Dr. John H. Harris Jr., pastor; and members of the Williams Family. Mercer County Deputy Superintendent of Elections Walker Worthy Jr. was the spirited emcee.

Additionally, Mercer County’s own Kya Collins, performed a soulful rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s Summertime, composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the opera “Porgy and Bess.”  The original featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers—a daring artistic choice at the time.
