County Clerk shares news that Real ID requirement is delayed

TRENTON, N.J. — Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello would like to inform Mercer residents that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline by two years for requiring citizens to have Real ID for domestic air travel and for entering federal buildings and facilities.

Starting May 7, 2025, you must have a Real ID-compliant driver license/ID to fly within the U.S. and regular driver’s licenses will no longer be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to fly domestically.  You still will be able to use a U.S. passport or passport card for identification.

It must be noted that until the deadline, a standard New Jersey driver’s license remains valid for air travel within the U.S. This extension will give state motor vehicle departments and travelers more time to prepare to meet the Real ID deadline.

Real ID complies with federal standards that impose stronger requirements to prove U.S. residency. Real ID is a more secure, federally mandated document that will be accepted at airports as identification and to enter federal buildings. The intent of Real ID is to ultimately reduce identity theft and fraud, and to enhance the nation’s security.

Passport books and passport cards will also remain as valid proof of identification for international travel and are Real ID compliant for domestic flights. The Mercer County Clerk’s Office offers both at its Trenton location and the County Connection site in Hamilton.

For the County Clerk’s passport office, please call 609-989-6473. Appointments can also be made at the Mercer County Connection, located at 957 N.J. Rt. 33, Hamilton. To schedule an appointment at County Connection, please contact the office at 609-890-9800. Or visit the County Clerk’s website at https://www.mercercounty.org/government/county-clerk. Please note that while our office also offers County ID Cards and Veteran ID cards, these are not useful to meet Real ID requirements.

For more information about Real ID and the requirements and documents needed to obtain one, you can visit https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/realid/. To apply for Real ID, appointments can be scheduled online at https://www.nj.gov/mvc/.

Support our veterans in Mercer County

Mercer County Veteran Services, led by Division Chief Medina Wilson, supports our veterans throughout the year in a variety of ways, as exemplified by recent events, including one this this weekend.

“In early November, I was honored to take part in Mercer County’s annual Veterans Day ceremony, which this year was held at the Hopewell Valley Golf Club. I thank the Knights of Columbus – specifically, the Bishop Griffin Assembly, Central New Jersey Centennial Chapter and District 25 Deputy Al Ambrose — for donating ShopRite gift cards at the event that will help veterans in need this holiday season.”

That was followed several days later by a well-attended Veterans Expo at the Mercer County Office Park in Ewing, where the County Clerk’s Office, County Connection and numerous vendors provided information on the many goods, services, programs, and discounts available to veterans.

On Nov. 11, Mercer County Veterans Services was presented with the New Jersey’s Governor “We Value Our Veterans Community Award during the State Veterans Day ceremony at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel.”

The Community Award recognizes communities that honor the sacrifices, patriotism and bravery of New Jersey service members.

“This past Sunday, I joined Veteran Services and local veterans at Mercer County’s annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance at the Mercer County Office Park gym. It’s been 81 years since America’s Naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked, and few of the battle’s survivors are alive today. But it’s important that we continue to educate younger generations on the significance of that event, which led to our nation’s entry into World War II, and that we remember those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.”

Mercer County also supports veterans through an annual Veterans Meal Drive. This year, Veteran Services will once again be able to offer meal packages to up to 100 veterans and their families. Gift bags that include staples and gift cards for a delicious holiday meal will be distributed to veterans, while supplies last, on Saturday, Dec. 10, between 9:30 a.m. and noon at the Mercer County Office Park, 1440 Parkside Ave. in Ewing. To receive a holiday gift bag, one must be a veteran, show your military ID, your DD214 or your NGB22.

In addition to the holiday meal package, veterans will have an opportunity to enter into a raffle for a variety of prizes, including an iPhone 14, all of which were donated by Amazon. The raffle drawing will be held Dec. 15.

Each year, our communities are very supportive of this fund drive. That kind of generosity is what makes Mercer County great. Our veterans have given so much now let’s continue to show them we care.

If you wish to donate, make your check payable to Mercer County Trust Fund. Please mail your donation to the Mercer County Division of Veteran Services, 1440 Parkside Ave., Ewing, NJ 08638. For additional information on donating, please call (609) 989-6120.

ProtectED Rooms officially launches with bullet-resistant bookcase that becomes physical barricade; protects people in violent events such as active shooters and civil unrest

Bookcase effortlessly rolls and latches to block entryways creating “a safe room in seconds” in places such as schools, hospitals, workplaces, government buildings and other gathering spaces

ATLANTA & BOSTON — (BUSINESS WIRE) — ProtectED Rooms (“ProtectED”), creators of bullet-resistant security products to help protect people in violent situations, officially launched today with the introduction of its groundbreaking bookcase. Designed with a focus on protecting school children and staff in an active shooter situation, the impenetrable bookcase easily rolls and locks into place blocking the classroom entryway – with the potential to lock down an entire school in seconds. The Atlanta-based company has expanded with a presence in the Boston area to serve the Northeast region.

Greg McAleer, a retired senior leader of the U.S. Secret Service currently working as Senior Vice President of Business Operations & Risk Management at Global Guardian commented, “The ProtectED bookcase is a dramatic game changer for schools and other organizations, enabling them to harden buildings and create safe spaces during critical incidents.” McAleer continued, “It is a denial of entry tool with ballistic capabilities that prevents access, protects from gunfire, and helps deter or delay an attack. Time is critical and this product provides the precious minutes for law enforcement to respond. The bookcase could not come at a more urgent time.”

The protective bookcase can be utilized in other places such as hospitals, workplaces, government buildings, retail locations, places of worship, among others. Notably, because it functions and looks like a conventional bookcase, it blends into an environment avoiding the appearance of militarization that could cause fear and intimidation, especially in schools where learning could be impacted.

“The ProtectED bookcase is an unbelievable, revolutionary option to get people safe quickly,” commented Anthony Grieco, Superintendent of Schools, Rockaway Borough School District in New Jersey. “It is unfortunate, but necessary that school safety and security is something we have to discuss on a daily basis as educators. As a father of three and a school administrator of 20 years, I take safety very seriously.” He concluded, “The bookshelves give us an advantage in the event of a crisis situation, so we feel, and are, much safer without our students and staff feeling like they’re in a shelter.”

ProtectED was founded by Pete Facchini, a retired Master Sergeant of the U.S. Army’s elite 75th Ranger Regiment and a school teacher’s husband and father of three. After the tragic massacres at Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook, he knew he could apply his expertise as a Special Operations Combat Breacher to develop something that could save lives. Pete enlisted the support of his childhood friend who is an accomplished furniture designer and architect, and two former U.S. Army Infantry Captains and Rangers to help.

“The increase in the numbers of shootings is staggering and tragic,” said Facchini. “Resolving this crisis is going to require addressing it on a number of fronts. One of the most harrowing aspects of these situations is that in many cases innocent people have no way to get away from the danger. To the extent that protective measures can be incorporated into places without it feeling like a military facility, is one way to help.”

The patent-pending bookcases are proudly, 100% Made in USA, and have been installed in classrooms in Georgia and in New Jersey, with more orders being fulfilled. Sales and distribution for the Northeast region are through Safety in Seconds and W.B. Mason in Massachusetts, and School Outfitters in Ohio.

About ProtectED Rooms

Its first product, a groundbreaking bookcase designed with a focus on protecting school children and staff, serves as a physical barricade and ballistic barrier. The bookcase is easily rolled in front of a door and quickly latches into place, covering the entryway – with the potential to lock down a building in seconds. The patent-pending bookcases are proudly, 100% Made in USA, UL Security Listed, UL EPD Certified, and BIFMA Compliant. Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello issues election statement following prosecutor’s report

After a public meeting on Monday, Nov. 21, Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello issued a statement about the Nov. 8 Gen. Election following the conclusion of Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri’s investigation into the recent Election Day scanner failure.

The investigation was aimed at determining whether, or not there was malicious or criminal intent to disrupt the conduct of the election. The inquiry was launched after County Clerk Covello requested that the County Prosecutor review the circumstances and report findings of the investigation to the State Attorney General, Mercer County Commissioners, County Executive and Mercer County’s other two election offices.

Following the publicly held meeting by the Mercer County Commissioners, Prosecutor Onofri announced his findings, stating that his Office conducted a thorough investigation and determined there was no criminal intent or vote tampering during the election. The investigation further concluded that there was a human error made in the programming of the voting machines by an employee of Dominion Voting Systems, which did not allow the machines to scan.

Despite this setback, on Election Day, all ballots were securely transferred to the Board of Elections Office, where they were counted by a bipartisan group of commissioners on high-capacity scanners. Every ballot that was cast on Election Day was counted and the integrity of the election remained intact throughout this process. The only difference from last year was that ballots were scanned at a central location instead of on-site at the polling locations.

“I would like to thank the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office for their swift and thorough investigation into this matter,” said Sollami Covello.

“I am pleased there was no intentional criminal action that created this problem. Election integrity is something I have worked hard to ensure and have taken great pride in over the past 17 years serving as Mercer County Clerk.”

Sollami Covello also praised the Board of Elections Commissioners for their handling of the ballot scanning process on Election Day and beyond, which was completed on time and certified to her office within the State timeline of Nov. 21. She also thanked the Office of the Superintendent of Elections for their work on reviewing the provisional ballots in a timely manner. The County Clerk’s certification of the general election has concluded ahead of the State deadline of Nov. 26.

Knightscope (Nasdaq: KSCP) receives contract for 41 machines from university in New Jersey

Public Safety Innovator Continues Market Expansion Improving Campus Safety

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — $KSCP #SecurityRobotKnightscope, Inc. (Nasdaq: KSCP), a leading developer of autonomous security robots, today announces a new contract at a New Jersey university for 31 of its K1 Blue Light Towers and 10 of its K1 Blue Light E-Phones.

According to a Times Higher Education student survey, visible security and more crime prevention measures were among the top recommendations for improved safety. With more and more students considering personal safety among their selection criteria when choosing a college or university to attend, it is likely that campuses with more security systems in place, like those offered by Knightscope, experience increases in enrollment and revenue.

Emergency blue light communication devices are iconic, recognizable symbols of safety that serve to deter potential negative activities from great distances. Given that blue light towers are immobile, Knightscope also offers its mobile Autonomous Security Robots (ASRs) as an additional layer of defense to extend the protective reach beyond their physical location. With thoughtful integrations, the mobility of ASRs combined with the convenience of near instant emergency communications of the blue light phones can greatly reduce crime on any campus.

Knightscope’s cellular and satellite communications with solar power provide students, faculty and visitors additional safety when away from campus buildings. This is a powerful step forward in achieving the four cornerstones of campus safety that administrators and officials should seek: communication, prevention, mobilization and apprehension.

Amazon helps disrupt three major counterfeit networks, protecting customers worldwide from fake goods

Joint operations with law enforcement led to the seizure of more than 240,000 counterfeit items in China, including fake luxury products, sports apparel, and automotive accessories infringing on BMW, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Under Armour, and other brands.

SEATTLE — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced the identification and disruption of three counterfeiting operations in China thanks to local Public Security Bureaus (PSB) and intel provided by Amazon’s Counterfeit Crimes Unit (CCU).

Law enforcement seized more than 240,000 counterfeit items in the Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces. The items were imitations of luxury, sports, and automotive brands. The seizure prevented the fake products from reaching Amazon customers or being sold elsewhere in the supply chain. These seizures of counterfeit goods based on intelligence from Amazon follow similar actions by law enforcement in England and the U.S. that took place in California and New Jersey.

“Our efforts to identify and dismantle counterfeit organizations are working,” said Kebharu Smith, associate general counsel and director of the Amazon Counterfeit Crimes Unit. “We appreciate law enforcement acting on our referrals and thoroughly pursuing these cases. These outcomes protect Amazon customers, disrupt the counterfeit supply chain, and halt their illicit proceeds.”

Information and intelligence provided by Amazon’s CCU to local authorities, including the locations of warehouses and manufacturing facilities, led to the successful identification and disruption of three major counterfeit operations and their upstream suppliers. The main suspects have been detained by local PSBs for further investigation. Any infringing listings connected to these cases have been eliminated.

Upon searching the facilities, law enforcement seized more than 130,000 counterfeit car accessories and fake brand labels that infringed on many brands’ intellectual property including BMW, Porsche, and General Motors; nearly 80,000 counterfeit luxury products; and more than 30,000 pieces of counterfeit clothing and fake brand labels that infringed on Hugo Boss, Puma and Under Armour’s intellectual property among others. This latest effort adds to the more than 3 million counterfeit products Amazon identified, seized, and appropriately disposed of last year, which included counterfeits sent to Amazon’s fulfillment centers in an unsuccessful attempt to sell to Amazon customers.

Amazon has also cooperated with local PSBs in China on operations involving bad actors that illegally purchased government-issued personal identities and business licenses in an attempt to register fraudulent Amazon seller accounts. As a result, 84 individuals were detained. Last year, Amazon stopped more than 2.5 million attempts by bad actors around the world to create new selling accounts, preventing them from listing a single product for sale.

Amazon works across the globe to fight counterfeiters, recently filing joint lawsuits with well-known brands, including Cartier, GE Appliances, WWE, Salvatore Ferragamo, and FELCO. Through its partnership with brands of all sizes, Amazon’s CCU constantly uncovers new approaches counterfeiters take to try to deceive customers and evade the law. The CCU uses that intelligence to equip law enforcement to pursue bad actors. In 2021, the CCU sued or referred for investigation over 600 criminals in the U.S., UK, EU, and China.

“There is no place for fraud on Amazon,” said Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of Amazon’s Worldwide Selling Partner Services. “The production and sale of counterfeit goods poses serious harm to the intellectual property rights of the brands involved, as well as to the legitimate interests of honest sellers—and the customers who place their trust in our stores. While we are proud of the progress we have made, we will not stop until we drive counterfeits to zero, and we will continue to invest and innovate until we get there.”

State of New Jersey expands use of Everbridge platform to enhance citizen safety

New Jersey State Police will broaden use of Everbridge population alerting software to communicate life-saving information to nine million residents

BURLINGTON, Mass. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Everbridge, the global leader in critical event management (CEM) and national public warning software solutions, today announced that the State of New Jersey expanded its use of the company’s Public Safety solutions to communicate with residents across the state in times of emergency. The New Jersey State Police added Everbridge’s Resident Connection and Integrated Public Alert & Warning System IPAWS solutions to maximize the reach of their critical citizen alerts, allowing public safety officials to reach the state’s nine million residents in the event of a crisis such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the costliest and most devastating storm to impact New Jersey. As learned during Sandy, and subsequent severe weather events that affected the Garden State, a critical part of any crisis response is the ability to share accurate information in a timely manner to the right population.

Resident Connection enables Everbridge customers to target potentially life-saving communications to impacted areas by simply drawing geo-fenced shapes on a map, allowing local, county, and state government leaders to quickly and accurately reach the largest number of people in those zones. Recipients may include the most vulnerable and often underserved populations, such as residents with special needs; dependence on supplemental oxygen or medications; cognitive, visual, or hearing impairment; and those lacking Internet access.

Additionally, through Everbridge, New Jersey State Police is now able to access FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS), which utilizes several communication pathways to reach the public, including: the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to deliver alerts via AM, FM and satellite radio, as well as broadcast, cable and satellite TV; Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) to deliver notifications to cell phones and mobile devices based on location, even if cellular networks are overloaded and can no longer support calls, text and emails; and integration with voice sirens, digital road signs, and emergency telephone networks.

“First responders work around the clock to protect citizens from critical events like wildfires, hurricanes and the pandemic,” said Francis Willett, Principal Product Manager for Everbridge Public Safety. “New Jersey is ahead of the curve when it comes to ensuring that the public receives potentially life-saving information, while at the same time improving message timeliness and accuracy when a crisis demands their full attention.”

Everbridge serves more than 300 organizations throughout the state of New Jersey, including local and county governments, hospitals, schools, retailers, corporations, and financial services providers. Everbridge also supports the states of Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Oregon, and West Virginia; the 18 local jurisdictions comprising the National Capital Region (NCR); and thousands of municipal, territorial, and tribal governments, including 22 of the 25 largest U.S. cities.

About Everbridge

Everbridge, Inc. (NASDAQ: EVBG) is a global software company that provides enterprise software applications that automate and accelerate organizations’ operational response to critical events in order to Keep People Safe and Organizations Running™. During public safety threats such as active shooter situations, terrorist attacks or severe weather conditions, as well as critical business events including IT outages, cyber-attacks, product recalls or supply-chain interruptions, over 6,300 customers in 76 countries rely on the Company’s Critical Event Management Platform to quickly and reliably aggregate and assess threat data, locate people at risk and responders able to assist, automate the execution of pre-defined communications processes through the secure delivery to over 100 different communication modalities, and track progress on executing response plans.
