AM Best’s BestWeek features interview with CEO of Afghanistan’s oldest insurance company

OLDWICK, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — #insurance–In the latest issue of AM Best’s BestWeek, the CEO of Kabul-based Insurance Corporation of Afghanistan, the country’s first and largest insurance company, said in an exclusive interview that he expects his company to keep operating despite the political climate and ongoing chaos.

The withdrawal of U.S. forces after two decades prompted a swift and full takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban, leading to mass evacuations and fleeing Afghan civilians. With Taliban control, Jamal Asfour, CEO of Kabul-based Insurance Corporation of Afghanistan, said the Middle Eastern country is stuck in political limbo as the international community weighs reaction.

“We see the statements of the Taliban,” said Asfour. “We see that there is a political gap currently in the country, which needs careful attention because this political gap is affecting our insurance industry.” He added that without international recognition, insurance-related restrictions could be placed on major banks, telecom companies or other major organizations operating in Afghanistan.

Asfour, who spoke with BestWeek from Jordan, said for now, his company is restarting operations, and that it work with regulators to ensure all products meet anticipated Shariah requirements. Insurance Corporation of Afghanistan was founded in 2007, and offers individual and business insurance including aviation, business, terrorism and political risk, health insurance, personal accident coverage and medical malpractice lines, among others. AM Best has no credit ratings issued in Afghanistan.

Global 10% of car and 20% of TV display use WICOP … ‘Permanent injunction against 13 brands infringing WICOP patents’

ANSAN, South Korea — (BUSINESS WIRE) — #AcrichSeoul Semiconductor Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ 046890), a leading global innovator of LED products and technology, announced that the New Jersey District Court issued a consent judgment and permanent injunction for infringement of twelve Seoul Semiconductor patents against 13 automotive lighting brand LED products being sold through automotive parts’ distribution channels.

WICOP is a revolutionary patented technology that is compactly designed with easy lens attachment without wire bonding or packaging, thus delivering higher thermal conductivity and a longer lifespan. In 2015, WICOP was launched to the world when Seoul Semiconductor’s CEO, Chung Hoon Lee, invited global reporters at the Intercontinental Hotel in Shanghai, China to launch the new WICOP products. It can be directly mounted in the semiconductor packaging or the PCB assembly process, and the most technically innovative feature is a convenient structure for headlamp lenses: 1/12 the size of a vertical or thin LED.

WICOP technology has been adopted in 102 car models, which is approximately 10% of the global automobile market, comprising of the headlamp, daytime running lights and turn signals. It is also widely used in display products such as TVs, smartphones, and tablets, in particular, WICOP has been adopted in about 20% of 220 million units of the global TV market in 2020.

“Intellectual property provides hope for young entrepreneurs and small businesses. But, it is very disappointing that even global, established companies knowingly use products that infringe others’ patents,” says Seoul Semiconductor’s founder, Chung Hoon Lee. “Intellectual property is an incredible tool that allows people to break through class barriers, enabling small businesses and young entrepreneurs to compete with any companies or competitors. Since our industrial revolution, the infant mortality rate has declined from 43% to 3%, while access to electricity has increased to reach 85% of the total world population and the illiteracy rate has also reduced significantly. So intellectual property enables to make life more transparent and safer,” added Lee.

About Seoul Semiconductor

Seoul Semiconductor is the world’s second-largest global LED manufacturer, a ranking excluding the captive market, and has more than 10,000 patents. Based on a differentiated product portfolio, Seoul offers a wide range of technologies, and mass produces innovative LED products for indoor and outdoor lighting, automotive, IT products, such as mobile phones, computer displays, and other applications, as well as the UV area. The company’s world’s first development and mass production products are becoming the LED industry standard and leading the global market with a package-free LED, WICOP; a high-voltage AC-driven LED, Acrich; an LED with 10X the output of a conventional LED, nPola; a cutting edge ultraviolet clean technology LED, Violeds; an all direction light emitting technology, filament LED; a natural sun spectrum LED, SunLike; and more. AP source: Cruz on vacation in Mexico as storm slams Texas

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, speaks with reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, on the fifth day of the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

DALLAS (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has traveled to Mexico for a family vacation as his home state struggles with a powerful winter storm that left many residents without power or safe drinking water.

The high-profile Republican lawmaker went with his family for a long-planned trip to Cancun and was expected to return immediately, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share private conversations.

Spokespersons for Cruz’s office did not immediately respond to request for comment Wednesday night or Thursday.

The revelation opens Cruz to significant criticism in Texas and beyond as he contemplates the possibility of a second presidential run in 2024. The two-term senator’s current term expires in early 2025.

Hundreds of thousands of people in Texas woke up Thursday to a fourth day without power, and a water crisis was unfolding after winter storms wreaked havoc on the state’s power grid and utilities.

Texas officials ordered 7 million people — one-quarter of the population of the nation’s second-largest state — to boil tap water before drinking the water, after days of record low temperatures that damaged infrastructure and froze pipes.

In Austin, some hospitals faced a loss in water pressure and in some cases, heat.

Cruz was a leading Republican voice even before he ran for president in 2016. In more recent years, he has positioned himself as a key ally of Donald Trump with an eye toward a potential second White House bid.

The Texas senator, who once described Trump as a “pathological liar,” championed the-then president’s call to block the certification last month of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory. That stand led to calls for Cruz’s resignation after a violent mob stormed the Capitol as Congress was affirming Biden’s win.

“You lied about the election. The Capitol was attacked. Sen. Cruz: Resign,” reads billboards put up across Texas by the anti-Trump Republican Accountability Project.

Cruz’s office dismissed the criticism.

“The left – and some grifters on the right – are consumed by partisan anger and rage,” his office said in a written statement earlier in the month. “Sen. Cruz will continue to work for 29 million Texans in the Senate.”
