Hughes advises Mercer County residents to prepare for hurricane season

TRENTON, N.J. — As the peak period for hurricane and tropical storm activity in New Jersey arrives, Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes advises County residents to plan and prepare for potential storms this summer and fall.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, but the peak time for hurricane and tropical storm activity in New Jersey is mid-August to late October. When they approach land, tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely deadly and destructive — even as far inland as Mercer County.

“In Mercer County, we have first-hand experience with how devastating hurricanes and tropical storms can be, as we experienced last September when the remnants of Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc in several of our communities,” Mr. Hughes said. “It’s essential that you and your family be ready before a storm strikes, and not put yourselves or others at risk by waiting until the last minute to prepare.”

The Mercer County Office of Emergency Management suggests taking the following readiness steps in preparation for hurricane season:

Make a plan

. You may not be at home or with your family when an emergency occurs, so it’s important to have a plan for getting everyone back together in a safe place. The plan should also include what to do if you must shelter at home or evacuate, and emergency contacts both near and far from your home. Make sure your family and everyone involved knows the plan, including children and your emergency contacts.

Build a kit

. Your emergency preparedness kit should include a stockpile supply of items, consisting of at least a three-day supply of bottled water, non-perishable foods and essential medications set aside for each member of your family and your pets. You can also include important documents and supplies for eating, bathing, safety and entertainment. Have a portable, crank or solar-powered USB charger on hand for your cell phone.

Stay informed

. Use credible websites and social media to stay informed of breaking news and continued coverage of emergency events. And continue to monitor traditional media sources — TV, newspapers and radio — for information during an emergency. Your local Emergency Management or Emergency Services office will provide you with information about such things as open shelters and evacuation orders. Also register for the Mercer County emergency notification system by visiting www.mercercounty.org and clicking on “Alert Mercer” at the top of the home page.

For more information about emergency preparedness, including making a plan, creating an emergency kit and staying informed, visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign at www.ready.gov, or the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management at  www.nj.gov/njoem.

Only 12% of U.S. jobs posted online disclose salary, but 98% of job seekers say it’s important to know the salary before applying, according to New Talent.com survey

In advance of the Pay Transparency Law that takes effect in November 2022, Talent.com, the world’s fastest-growing job search platform, conducted a survey that revealed a massive gap between companies disclosing salary in job postings and the candidates’ application habits. Findings show why employers aren’t attracting top talent and the reasons many job seekers are missing out on their dream jobs. Full report here.

MONTREAL — (BUSINESS WIRE) — Talent.com Inc. conducted a survey of 2,000 currently employed or job seeking residents of New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania in May and June with the goal of evaluating the importance of salary disclosure in job postings online to respondents when seeking a new position. The survey was inspired by the Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements Law that will start November 1, 2022 in New York City. All employers with four or more employees or one or more domestic workers are covered by this new provision of the law stating they must include a good faith salary range for every job, promotion, and transfer opportunity advertised.

As the fastest-growing player in next-generation job search platforms, Talent.com’s survey offers unique insight into the deficiencies between job seekers connecting with prospective employers. For the survey respondents living in New York, 70% had never heard about the upcoming new transparency law. Salary was the most important factor employees considered when looking for a new job according to 77%. An astounding 98% of survey respondents said it was important for them to know job salary before considering applying, but according to Talent.com’s data in June 2022 – only 12% of U.S. jobs offered online disclose salary information. In terms of age, salary was considered more important to those 55+ when compared to the 18-34 age group, 84% versus 52% respectively. Report here.

“Our salary survey clearly shows the major problem that is causing U.S. employers to have difficulties attracting and retaining top talent in the current job market,” said Lucas Martinez, Co-CEO of Talent.com. “A high percentage of organizations say their hires are not quality hires. This can be greatly improved by eliminating friction in the hiring and interviewing process – starting with complete salary transparency. We look forward to more online job postings revealing salary ranges in 2022,” concluded Martinez.

TRENTON, N.J. — A professional juror has selected the winners from 107 entries in this year’s Mercer County Senior Art Show, which is being held through Aug. 5 at The Conference Center at Mercer in West Windsor at the Mercer County Community College campus.

Annually, the Mercer County Division of Culture and Heritage partners with the Mercer County Office on Aging to produce the Mercer County Senior Art Show. First-place winners from the County show advance to the New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show held in the fall.

Each year, the Mercer County Division of Culture and Heritage partners with the Mercer County Office on Aging to produce the Mercer County Senior Art Show. First-place winners from the County show advance to the New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show held in the fall.

Mercer County residents ages 60 or older may submit artwork to the Mercer County Senior Art Show. There is no fee to enter. Artwork was entered in the following categories: acrylic, craft, mixed media, oil, pastel, photography, sculpture, watercolor and works on paper.

AM Best affirms credit ratings of Assured Guaranty Re Overseas Ltd.

OLDWICK, N.J. — (BUSINESS WIRE) — AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A+ (Superior) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “aa” (Superior) of Assured Guaranty Re Overseas Ltd. (AGRO) (Bermuda). The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable.

The ratings reflect AGRO’s balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strongest, as well as its adequate operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM).

AGRO’s risk-adjusted capital, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), is currently and projected by AM Best to be at the strongest level over the next year. Shareholders’ equity of AGRO has been stable in the past few years, and is forecast to grow steadily in the forecast years. The company’s strong liquidity position, conservative investment portfolio and well-positioned financial flexibility due to its affiliation with Assured Guaranty Re Ltd., the indirect parent, and Assured Guaranty Ltd. (AGL), the ultimate parent, as well as AGRO’s active capital management, provide support for the balance sheet assessment of strongest.

AM Best assesses AGRO’s operating performance as adequate based on its operating results, which have been driven primarily by investment income. Recent two-year loss ratios have increased to a great extent, compared with the prior few years’ low loss ratios, mainly as a result of the increased losses and decreased earned premiums from the aircraft residual value insurance (RVI) business, which has been impacted heavily by the low activity in the aviation industry affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. AGRO’s expense ratios in 2020 and 2021 have been hampered by the increase in expenses and decrease in earned premiums. The high combined ratio has affected AGRO’s current overall operating performance. AGRO has low net returns on equity due to its underutilization of capital, and the opportunistic deployment of capital to new non-financial guaranty business.

AM Best assesses AGRO’s business profile as neutral. The company’s life financial reinsurance program continues to exhibit risk profiles with very low loss probability. AGRO’s aircraft RVI program was suspended since 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, and AM Best does not expect it to resume until the international travel is opened fully. AGRO has limited competition with minimal number of players in these lines of business segments. AGRO actively seeks for opportunistic growth in non-financial guaranty business, not to chase premium growth.

AGRO’s overall ERM assessment is appropriate, as the company employs a robust ERM framework and infrastructure embedded across the AGL group of companies, of which AGRO is a member. AM Best considers AGRO’s risk assessment capabilities to be aligned appropriately with its risk profile.

The ratings also take into consideration the benefits and support AGRO receives from the AGL group of companies — a broader, successful franchise — and its importance to AGL’s overall business strategy and profile.
