US Transportation Secretary tours Trenton-Mercer Airport

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently joined Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes, and other County and local officials for a tour of Trenton-Mercer Airport that enabled Secretary Buttigieg to see firsthand why the County is seeking federal funding to support its efforts to replace the airport’s antiquated, undersized passenger terminal as well as the air traffic control tower.

Watson, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Ewing Mayor Bert Steinmann (behind Ms. Watson Coleman) and County Executive Brian M. Hughes.

Mercer County received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval last year to move forward with the design and construction of a new terminal that will better accommodate current airport users as well as future growth.

“I thank Congresswoman Watson Coleman and her staff for arranging Secretary Buttigieg’s visit and the tour led by Airport Manager Melinda Montgomery and Deputy Administrator Aaron T. Watson, who oversees the airport,” Mr. Hughes said.

“Our federal and state representatives, along with our County Commissioners, Ewing Mayor Bert Steinmann and other local leaders, have been extremely supportive of Trenton-Mercer airport as it has evolved into a premier travel hub and economic engine both for the County and the region.”

Mercer celebrates Asian-Pacific Heritage Month

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.

A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Chinese immigrants were the most workers who laid the tracks.

MERCER COUNTY is home to many who self-identify as Asian or Pacific Islander. Yet, theirs and their ancestors’ rich heritage, stories and contributions are often overlooked. During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I encourage everyone to fully engage with Mercer County’s diverse communities to learn about each other, to promote acceptance and inclusion, and to work together to advance education, tolerance, and love for one another. Below you’ll find a calendar of events to start you on your journey.

Brian M. Hughes, Mercer County Executive

“A Hyphenated Spirit,” Ethnic Prejudice and Japanese American Incarceration during WWII

Monday, May 22, 7 p.m., virtual, Mercer County Library System

. A 1983 Congressional Blue-Ribbon Commission declared that the incarceration of Japanese American citizens during the Pacific War (Executive Order 9066, issued by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1942) had been a “grave injustice” caused by “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.” Indeed, this dark chapter of American history resulted in the relocation of 117,000 people including 70,000 US Citizens, based solely on their ethnic heritage.  This talk will investigate the history behind why the US population in 1942 was willing to accept that individuals of Japanese descent had a “hyphenated spirit” and, therefore, should be denied their civil rights. Ultimately, we will interrogate the specter of the landmark, ethnically-based Executive Order 9066 to understand how it still haunts contemporary US politics. Presented by Dr. Anne Giblin Gedacht, Assistant Professor of History at Seton Hall University. Please email hopeprogs@mcl.org to register to receive link to program. Registration is required.

In two decades, Fire Protection has become a national leader in the industry

CINCINNATI — (BUSINESS WIRE) — $CTAS — The Cintas Corporation (Nasdaq: CTAS) Fire Protection Division, a national leader in fire sprinkler systems, fire alarms, fire suppression systems, extinguisher inspections, emergency signage and training, is celebrating 20 years of growth, leadership and success.

Cintas launched its Fire business in April 2003 as part of its then-combined First Aid, Safety and Fire Division. It began with a small acquisition in New Jersey and 24 employee-partners and has continued to grow since.

Tuesday, Cintas operates the Fire Protection division as a separate business unit1. It employs more than 2,500 employee-partners across the United States operating service locations, processing centers and dedicated support centers.

John Amann, President and COO of Cintas Fire Protection since 2016, is proud of the division’s important value proposition.

“We help our customers protect their most valuable assets: their people, their property and their businesses,” Amann said. “It’s a responsibility that we never take lightly.”

Cintas’ commitment to providing fire protection services has recently extended beyond its customers to support those who help people facing fire and fire-related emergencies.

The division’s relationship with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) includes philanthropic support for the families of those who have lost their lives in service of others during fire emergencies, as well as ongoing business support for its Prevent the Preventable program which provides education and resources to communities to help reduce fire and other hazards and help improve firefighter safety.

Cintas is a Chief Sponsor of the NFFF’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs, its annual fundraising campaign that includes hundreds of events around the country that observe and remember the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and raise money to support surviving family members of the fallen fire heroes. In the last two years, Cintas has helped raise more than $150,000 for the foundation.

“Our corporate culture is what sets us apart,” Amann said, “We aim to do things the right way, and we try to be a great community member. We service our customers with integrity, attention and care and we help our customers protect what’s most important to them. And we’re helping support the fire industry and its people and families who risk their lives to help others.”

As Cintas Fire Protection celebrates two decades of growth, success and leadership in the industry, its first two decades of success have set the stage for its future.

“The next 20 years of Cintas Fire Protection look even more exciting,” Amann said, “I can’t wait to see opportunities that will occur along the way.”
