Sanjay Rao for actor and breakout star in Glenn Powell’s Netflix film ‘Hit Man’

Multi-talented breakout star and comedic ace Sanjay Rao is ready to make a name for himself starring alongside Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Austin Amelio, and Retta in the highly anticipated and acclaimed Netflix series, Hit Man aimed for release on the platform on Friday, June 7 with a limited theatrical release prior.

 

Co-written by leading man Glen Powell (Set It Up, Top Gun: Maverick), Hit Man belongs to a bundle of genres: noir, screwball comedy, thriller. But at its core it’s a relationship movie. The sparks between fake hit man “Gary Johnson” (Powell) and prospective client “Madison” (Adria Arjona) fly immediately — until layers upon layers of deceit turn their budding romance upside down. Sanjay stars alongside comedy great Retta as the comedic duo of the film – Gary Johnson’s co-workers on the police force who guide him through his undercover missions with humor and encouragement.

 

Sanjay’s incredible journey from STEM to the world of comedy has led him to a pivotal role. Rao, born in Arizona, had a childhood dream ignited at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where he aspired to become an astronaut after meeting the legendary John Glenn. A Doctor and Engineer by education, he took a leap into the world of comedy, fueled by a passion for acting and a keen interest in making people laugh.

 

Graduating with a major in Biochemistry from the University of Texas in 2009, Sanjay’s commitment to his dreams was evident even in his college days, as he balanced living at home and working in a lab while pursuing his studies. Sanjay’s comedic journey began in Austin. Starting as a medical assistant, he navigated the open mic scene, embracing failures before finding his stride in improv. His resilience and dedication eventually led him to commercial work and the Crunchtime Show.

 

Sanjay’s connection to comedy deepened when he met his wife, involved in the comedy scene at Coltown. They’ve shared a journey of love and laughter for the past six years. His move to LA in 2019, followed by his wife in 2020, marked a significant shift in his career as a non-union actor, with his first notable TV role in The Flight Attendant.

 

 

Sanjay’s success is not solely his own; the support of mentors like Laurel Vouvrai, the comedy community in Texas, and notable figures like Richard Linklader and Glenn Powell played a crucial role. County Exec. Benson releases 100-day accomplishments since his office election

MERCER COUNTY — It has been 100 days since Mercer County Executive Dan Benson was sworn into office on Jan. 1,  2024.

“When we took office, the county faced considerable challenges. The 2022 county audit wasn’t complete, several key financial statements needed corrections, and a key county bond was near its expiration. In our first 100 days, we have put Mercer County on stable footing. We have an experienced team that has restored competence and professionalism to Mercer County government,” said County Executive Benson.

Benson immediately hired a qualified and experienced staff, led by Christopher Marion as County Administrator, Sharon Shinkle Gardner as Chief of Staff, Taraun Tice McKnight and Ana Montero as Deputy Administrators, and Nick Trasente as Chief Financial Officer. In the first 50 days, this team reorganized Mercer County government, making the following changes:

  • County Administrator Marion will oversee Buildings & Grounds, Corrections, Trenton-Mercer Airport, the Mercer County Library System, and the Joint Insurance Fund
  • Deputy Administrator Tice McKnight will oversee Human Services, Mercer County Office of Training and Employment Services (One-Stop Career Center), Housing, and Veterans Affairs
  • Deputy Administrator Montero will oversee a new joint department of Public Health and Safety, including the Office of Emergency Management and Emergency Communications

“While working to fix the county’s finances, we have also laid the foundation for the work ahead. We’ve improved accessibility, fostered greater collaboration with our municipalities, increased transparency to public contracting, modernized our County Code, and ensured our administration is both diverse and transparent,” said County Executive Benson.

Highlights of the Benson Administration’s first 100 days in office include:

  • Completed the long overdue 2022 Mercer County Audit
  • Shared updates on IRS penalties incurred from the last administration with the Board of Commissioners
  • Drafted initial revisions to the Mercer County Code, the first set of revisions in over ten years
  • Completed an April 4th bond note sale rolling over the $150+ million sale from the last administration, at a lower interest rate, while maintaining our bond rating
  • Worked with our new CFO and financial consultants to recreate and identify missing or incorrect County financial documents
  • Obtained a $70,000 grant to install hearing induction loops to assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing at select county facilities
  • Launched a new round of zero-interest loans for local small businesses
  • Provided funding to help Hamilton Township buy and preserve Kuser Woods
  • Completed a comprehensive After Action Review of Mercer County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Appointed a diverse group of Mercer residents to numerous Boards and Commissions

  • Installing Wi-Fi at Trenton-Mercer Airport
  • Completing an audit of Mercer County Parks System.
  • Conducting a Corrections Facility Assessment
  • Hosting Bi-Annual Legislative Delegation meetings to discuss Mercer County’s priorities

Box Office: ‘Godzilla x Kong’ to tower over ‘Monkey Man,’ ‘First Omen’

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is poised to stomp all over the box office competition… again.

 

After its better-than-expected debut, Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s monster tentpole has generated $95 million domestically and $210 worldwide to date. Now, “Godzilla x Kong” looks to add $32 million to $36 million in its second weekend of release.

 

Those ticket sales, down roughly 55% from its opening, will easily be enough to lead over two newcomers, director Dev Patel’s action-thriller “Monkey Man” and Disney and 20th Century’s supernatural prequel “The First Omen.”

 

“Monkey Man” is targeting $12 million to start, while “The First Omen” is projected to pull ahead with $14 million to $15 million. Holdovers, including “Kung Fu Panda 4,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” will otherwise round out box office charts.

 

“Monkey Man” was initially destined for Netflix and not the big screen. But Universal Pictures landed rights after Jordan Peele, whose production company has a distribution deal with the studio, saw and acquired the movie, feeling it was deserving of a theatrical release. It was picked up for $10 million, so it won’t take much to turn a profit in its big screen run.

 

Patel, in addition to directing in his feature debut, also stars in the politically charged film that takes on the Hindu caste system. He plays Kid, an anonymous man who exacts revenge on the corrupt leaders who are responsible for the death of his mother. Through his journey, he becomes the savior of the poor and powerless people. Reviews have been mostly positive, with Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praising the all the blood-soaked action. “The best thing about ‘Monkey Man’ is Patel’s staging of, and acting in, the fight scenes,” he wrote in his review. “They’re far more random and spontaneous than we’re used to, with a razory intensity.”

 

“The First Omen” is the sixth installment in the otherworldly franchise and its first new entry in 18 years. It’s eyeing a similar start to its series predecessor, 2006’s reboot “The Omen,” starring Liev Schriber and Julia Stiles. That film opened to $16 million and eventually powered to $119 million globally (not adjusted for inflation).

 

“The First Omen” was modestly budgeted and cost about $30 million to produce. This film, which takes place before the events of “The Omen,” follows an American woman (Nell Tiger Free) sent to work at a church in Rome. Once she’s there, she uncovers a sinister conspiracy to bring about the birth of the Antichrist.

Matt Rife sets two Netflix comedy specials, including first full-length crowd work show

More Matt Rife is coming to Netflix.

 

Following his comedy special “Natural Selection” in November 2023, Rife will make two more specials at Netflix. The first in Rife’s two-special deal is set to release later this year. It will be Netflix’s first-ever, full-length crowd work special. It will shoot at The Comedy Zone in Charlotte, N.C., and will be directed by Erik Griffin. Irony Point will produce, along with Rife and his manager Christina Shams as executive producers.

 

Rife’s “Natural Selection,” brought in more than 10 million views in the first few weeks of its release along with reaching the Global Top 10 in 42 countries. Prior to his Netflix hit, Rife released three YouTube specials, which he self-produced and distributed, that now sit at 43 million views.

 

The comedian is also a social media star after his career grew by going viral times on TikTok and having a combined 33 million followers and 2 billion views across all platforms. Last year, Rife broke Ticketmaster due to high demand for ticket sales to “The ProbleMATTic World Tour.” The tour included four sold-out shows at Dolby Theater, six nights at Radio City Music Hall and five sold-out shows at Mohegan Sun Area. While his “ProbleMATTic World Tour” is still going strong, there are more stops to come in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Europe and the Middle East.

 

Rife returns to Los Angeles to headline The Hollywood Bowl on May 8 for the Netflix Is A Joke Festival, which will be his first-ever appearance.

Ronald D. Moore to receive the Outstanding Television Writer Award at the 2024 Austin Film Festival

The Austin Film Festival (AFF) has announced Ronald D. Moore as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Television Writer Award for his prolific impact on the world of television and his work on celebrated science fiction and fantasy series such as “For All Mankind,” “Outlander” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

 

“I’m very honored,” Moore told Variety over the phone. “It’s great when your work is recognized and when a renowned organization like the Austin Film Festival chooses to do something like this. It’s amazing. I’m just very humbled by it all.”

 

Moore will receive the award at the Festival Awards Luncheon during AFF’s Writers Conference, which takes place Oct. 24-27. Two panels, “A Conversation with Ronald D. Moore” and “Script To Screen: Battlestar Galactica,” are also scheduled for the event.

 

“It’s a moment to stop and look around,” Moore said of his honor. “It’s always amazing when you get to the mountaintop — and you’re not always on the mountaintop — so when you get there, it’s cool to stop and take a gander, to look around and really enjoy it. I’ve been very lucky, and I’ve had an amazing run of different shows and worked with a lot of great people. Something like this reminds you to enjoy it. It’s been an amazing journey and it’s really cool.”

 

Moore got his break in the industry as a staff writer for “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” for which he wrote 27 episodes, including the award-winning two-hour series finale. In 1994, Moore scored his first Emmy nomination and joined the staff of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as a supervising producer. He was promoted to co-executive producer the following year.

 

In 2003, Moore re-imaged the “Battlestar Galactica” series, based on the original, which aired in the late 1970s. He would serve as showrunner and executive producer on the sci-fi drama, which aired for four seasons. During its historic run, “Battlestar Galactica” received a Peabody award and an Emmy nomination for best writing in a dramatic series and was selected as a top television program by the American Film Institute in 2005 and 2006.

 

Through his company Tall Ship productions, Moore is currently producing the Golden Globe-nominated series “Outlander” for Starz and “For All Mankind” on Apple TV+. Moore scored an overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television in 2020 where he is developing new series for the studio.

Cinecittà chief Nicola Maccanico on turning a profit despite Hollywood strikes and prospects for Italy’s new tax rebates

Italy’s Cinecittà Studios, which have been undergoing a radical overhaul since 2021, recently released their fiscal 2023 results, which saw the Rome-based facilities turn a profit for the second year in a row after bleeding red ink for years.

 

The iconic studios are being managed by Nicola Maccanico, a former Warner Bros. and Sky Italia senior exec who last year lured big shoots such as Roland Emmerich’s gladiator series “Those About to Die” starring Anthony Hopkins and Netflix’s period soap “The Decameron” to the government-run “City of Cinema.”

 

Last year, the studios were able to maintain a 70% occupancy level despite the impact of the Hollywood strikes and are on track to keep that level this year with several big Hollywood shoots coming soon, though NDAs are keeping details under wraps.

 

Below, Maccanico speaks to Variety about how he’s navigating Cinecittà’s revamp and what the prospects are going forward.

 

The studios’ profit margin is on a par with last year. Where is the growth?

We managed to grow 20% in terms of turnover [that in 2023 was €46.8 ($50.5 million)], which then generated the €1.8 million profit in a year marked by the writers’ and actors’ strikes in the United States. That, in my opinion, is an unequivocal confirmation of Cinecittà’s new positioning. While in 2022 lots of great things happened that could have been considered a one-off, in 2023 we confirmed, under very different circumstances, that Cinecittà is now a well-established player in the global market. The studios are now able to land productions of different sizes with continuity. Cinecittà, thanks to its refurbished facilities and services, can systematically attract large national and international productions again. We’ve made sure that this now publicly-owned company is standing on its own two feet. The fiscal 2023 results are a full-fledged confirmation of this and now we can grow further thanks to investments linked to the PNR [EU Pandemic Recovery Fund] with even greater confidence because it’s clear at this point that we need more soundstage space and more services.

 

How are the new soundstages coming along?

The first news on the horizon, linked to the fiscal 2023 results, is that having reached our 2023 target, we are now building new theaters. So the PNR funding is turning into reality. The investment plan has become operational and the planned construction sites are now active. In other words, in June 2023, having hit our growth target – which in turn activated financing – we launched tenders to build new facilities, and since March 2023 we have opened nine construction sites. By 2026, we will have five new soundstages and an added 12,000 square meters (129,000 square feet) of production capacity. This will allow Cinecittà to take a leap forward and lock in more international partnerships.

 

Close to half of Cinecittà’s turnover is generated by the studios’ art and production design department. What’s your take on that?

During the first year of the studios’ re-launch, the art and set construction department generated about €2.5 million. Then last year, they reached revenues of almost €19 million, and this year they made more than €22 million. That’s an almost tenfold growth. So it’s clear that the occupancy of our soundstages is largely linked to the quality of the production services we offer, and the Cinecittà art department really stands out thanks to our in-house staff and our many partners. I also want to point out that our new LED wall in Theater 18 has become a fundamental asset for Cinecittà because it puts us at the technological forefront. Since we inaugurated it in June 2022, it’s been occupied for more than 300 days by directors including Roland Emmerich, Joe Wright, Angelina Jolie and young Italian auteur Pietro Castellitto. This stands as testimony to the fact that this is a tool that’s available to everyone and, just as importantly, can generate enormous value for a film studio.
