Ronald D. Moore to receive the Outstanding Television Writer Award at the 2024 Austin Film Festival

The Austin Film Festival (AFF) has announced Ronald D. Moore as the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Television Writer Award for his prolific impact on the world of television and his work on celebrated science fiction and fantasy series such as “For All Mankind,” “Outlander” and “Battlestar Galactica.”

“I’m very honored,” Moore told Variety over the phone. “It’s great when your work is recognized and when a renowned organization like the Austin Film Festival chooses to do something like this. It’s amazing. I’m just very humbled by it all.”

Moore will receive the award at the Festival Awards Luncheon during AFF’s Writers Conference, which takes place Oct. 24-27. Two panels, “A Conversation with Ronald D. Moore” and “Script To Screen: Battlestar Galactica,” are also scheduled for the event.

“It’s a moment to stop and look around,” Moore said of his honor. “It’s always amazing when you get to the mountaintop — and you’re not always on the mountaintop — so when you get there, it’s cool to stop and take a gander, to look around and really enjoy it. I’ve been very lucky, and I’ve had an amazing run of different shows and worked with a lot of great people. Something like this reminds you to enjoy it. It’s been an amazing journey and it’s really cool.”

Moore got his break in the industry as a staff writer for “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” for which he wrote 27 episodes, including the award-winning two-hour series finale. In 1994, Moore scored his first Emmy nomination and joined the staff of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” as a supervising producer. He was promoted to co-executive producer the following year.

In 2003, Moore re-imaged the “Battlestar Galactica” series, based on the original, which aired in the late 1970s. He would serve as showrunner and executive producer on the sci-fi drama, which aired for four seasons. During its historic run, “Battlestar Galactica” received a Peabody award and an Emmy nomination for best writing in a dramatic series and was selected as a top television program by the American Film Institute in 2005 and 2006.

Through his company Tall Ship productions, Moore is currently producing the Golden Globe-nominated series “Outlander” for Starz and “For All Mankind” on Apple TV+. Moore scored an overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television in 2020 where he is developing new series for the studio.

Cinecittà chief Nicola Maccanico on turning a profit despite Hollywood strikes and prospects for Italy’s new tax rebates

Italy’s Cinecittà Studios, which have been undergoing a radical overhaul since 2021, recently released their fiscal 2023 results, which saw the Rome-based facilities turn a profit for the second year in a row after bleeding red ink for years.

The iconic studios are being managed by Nicola Maccanico, a former Warner Bros. and Sky Italia senior exec who last year lured big shoots such as Roland Emmerich’s gladiator series “Those About to Die” starring Anthony Hopkins and Netflix’s period soap “The Decameron” to the government-run “City of Cinema.”

Last year, the studios were able to maintain a 70% occupancy level despite the impact of the Hollywood strikes and are on track to keep that level this year with several big Hollywood shoots coming soon, though NDAs are keeping details under wraps.

Below, Maccanico speaks to Variety about how he’s navigating Cinecittà’s revamp and what the prospects are going forward.

The studios’ profit margin is on a par with last year. Where is the growth?

We managed to grow 20% in terms of turnover [that in 2023 was €46.8 ($50.5 million)], which then generated the €1.8 million profit in a year marked by the writers’ and actors’ strikes in the United States. That, in my opinion, is an unequivocal confirmation of Cinecittà’s new positioning. While in 2022 lots of great things happened that could have been considered a one-off, in 2023 we confirmed, under very different circumstances, that Cinecittà is now a well-established player in the global market. The studios are now able to land productions of different sizes with continuity. Cinecittà, thanks to its refurbished facilities and services, can systematically attract large national and international productions again. We’ve made sure that this now publicly-owned company is standing on its own two feet. The fiscal 2023 results are a full-fledged confirmation of this and now we can grow further thanks to investments linked to the PNR [EU Pandemic Recovery Fund] with even greater confidence because it’s clear at this point that we need more soundstage space and more services.

How are the new soundstages coming along?

The first news on the horizon, linked to the fiscal 2023 results, is that having reached our 2023 target, we are now building new theaters. So the PNR funding is turning into reality. The investment plan has become operational and the planned construction sites are now active. In other words, in June 2023, having hit our growth target – which in turn activated financing – we launched tenders to build new facilities, and since March 2023 we have opened nine construction sites. By 2026, we will have five new soundstages and an added 12,000 square meters (129,000 square feet) of production capacity. This will allow Cinecittà to take a leap forward and lock in more international partnerships.

Close to half of Cinecittà’s turnover is generated by the studios’ art and production design department. What’s your take on that?

During the first year of the studios’ re-launch, the art and set construction department generated about €2.5 million. Then last year, they reached revenues of almost €19 million, and this year they made more than €22 million. That’s an almost tenfold growth. So it’s clear that the occupancy of our soundstages is largely linked to the quality of the production services we offer, and the Cinecittà art department really stands out thanks to our in-house staff and our many partners. I also want to point out that our new LED wall in Theater 18 has become a fundamental asset for Cinecittà because it puts us at the technological forefront. Since we inaugurated it in June 2022, it’s been occupied for more than 300 days by directors including Roland Emmerich, Joe Wright, Angelina Jolie and young Italian auteur Pietro Castellitto. This stands as testimony to the fact that this is a tool that’s available to everyone and, just as importantly, can generate enormous value for a film studio.

Air Supply getting movie biopic treatment with ‘All Out of Love’

Air Supply may be the latest chart-topping musical act to get the big screen treatment.

Altit Media Group said it plans to make biopic about the band that will, in a nod to one of the group’s biggest hits, be entitled,  “All Out of Love: The Air Supply Story.”

The film will be released in summer 2025 to celebrate Air Supply’s 50th anniversary. Filming is set to take place in Australia and the U.K. during the fourth quarter of 2024.

Air Supply found success with a series of romantic ballads. Their hits include “Here I Am,” “Lost in Love,” “The One That You Love”, “All Out of Love”, “Every Woman in the World” and “Even the Nights Are Better.”

The group scored seven Top 5 singles in a row, tying the Beatles’ consecutive run, and went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide while playing over 5,000 shows. Members Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock have continued to tour the world.

Hollywood has been on a hot streak when it comes to biopics about music legends, with recent releases like “Elvis” and “Bob Marley: One Love” scoring with audiences. Studios have announced upcoming films about the Beatles and the Bee Gees, as the popularity of the genre grows.

According to the producers, “All Out of Love: The Air Supply Story” will explore “the highs and lows of the band’s career and their rise to international fame.” It follows Russell and Hitchcock, the two founding members of Air Supply, as they pursue their musical dreams, rising from humble beginnings in Australia to a breakthrough in the United States.

Altit Media Group’s Dean Altit will produce the film, with Barry Siegel, Jesse Weiner and Julia Xu serving as executive producers.

Air Supply’s Hitchcock said, “What a great occasion to celebrate our 50th Anniversary! And a personal thrill for me to see Graham’s songs be the basis for the biopic.” Air Supply’s Russell added, “We are absolutely thrilled that the Air Supply story will now be made into a biopic and set for release in 2025, the year of our 50th anniversary. The timing is so perfect.”

Altit added, “As a fan myself, I am thrilled to bring this iconic band’s extraordinary journey to life on the big screen. With their timeless melodies and heartfelt lyrics, Air Supply has captured the hearts of millions. The film will not only celebrate their music, but also take audiences on a captivating voyage into the world of love.”

Altit’s producing credits include “Not Without Hope” starring Zachary Levi and Josh Duhamel, “The Misfits” starring Pierce Brosnan and “The Good Neighbor” starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He recently wrapped production on “Home Sweet Home Rebirth” starring Michele Morrone and Urassaya Sperbund, adapted from the popular video game franchise “Home Sweet Home.”

Lesbian law firm owner ensures ‘reproductive freedom’ for all-female staff

— Owner contributes $430K for IVF treatments amidst court controversy

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five couples in the U.S. struggles with some form of infertility.

— Photo: Attorney Brooke Goff, founder and owner of Goff Law Group in Connecticut, is helping her employees start a family by offering a bonus health benefit by pledging $43oK for coverage of infertility treatments.   From left: Attorney Brooke Goff, her wife Angeline Ioannou, and their children: 11-year-old Grayson and 5-month-old Victoria, who were conceived via IVF and IUI, are a refreshing example of the modern family. — Credit: Goff Law Group

The biggest roadblock for most of them to start on the path of parenthood is the high cost of fertility treatments.  To ease that financial burden and help those seeking to start a family achieve success, Brooke Goff, founder and president of Goff Law Group in Connecticut, has pledged $430K to offset the massive expense of the fertility process.

The enhanced benefit is a hot topic given the recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling on “fetal personhoods” and the uncertain future of the procedure.

“I knew at a young age that I wanted to have a family, yet I also knew that as a gay woman, I would need some assistance from science,” said Attorney Brooke Goff, owner of Goff Law Group, a personal injury law firm in Connecticut.

“In vitro fertilization fulfilled my desire to carry a child and experience the beautiful journey of pregnancy, something every woman should be entitled to, if she so desires, regardless of her sexuality.”

That’s why in 2022, Attorney Goff began researching viable solutions and was told that only larger global companies, not small businesses, would even consider fertility health coverage.

“I was taken aback that more small businesses do not invest in their employees across the board- with family planning and creation,” she adds.

“Employees are the lifeblood of any company and if a business owner wants continued success and profitability, he or she should be investing in their employees’ family – both present and future.”

Undeterred, Attorney Goff eventually partnered with Carrot, a third-party health benefit company, and absorbed the entire near half-a-million-dollar cost of implementing the program.  Specifics of Goff Law Group’s comprehensive IVF program include:

  • mental health counseling as related to the infertility process
  • individual infertility journey design and implementation
  • access to over 800 clinics throughout the United States
  • discount coverage for infertility care including but not limited to IVF, IUI, surrogacy, adoption, preservation of embryos, genetic testing, and medications related to infertility
  • coverage for after birth lactation services, overnight doulas, and women’s behavioral health as related to postpartum

“It has always been my belief that every woman deserves the right to have a family and unfortunately, it is easier for some than others,” said Attorney Goff.

“When infertility comes into the mix, it adds unplanned costs to the family and a lot of anxiety and uncertainty.  Hence, it is important to offer a benefit with full-spectrum physical and mental health care.”

Attorney Goff explains that although some health insurance plans cover run-of-the-mill infertility treatments, they may have certain requirements as a result of strict state mandates such as 12 months of unsuccessful attempts to become pregnant and other limitations based on the age of the woman.

She further notes that health insurance typically does not cover surrogacy, adoption, egg harvesting, donor eggs, or donor sperm. “I wanted to provide something better to my employees alternative to the minimal health insurance coverages currently on the market,” Attorney Goff adds.

Regarding the recent Alabama legislation that allows couples undergoing IVF to sue a fertility clinic for lost or damaged embryos under the state’s wrongful death law, Attorney Goff explains that the ruling takes away pregnancy options and freedoms from potential parents who desperately desire a biological family. She believes that couples who are having infertility issues will now be deterred in using IVF intervention due to the risk of criminalization if their embryos are not used or disposed of properly.

“The ruling is making a lot of assumptions as to what might happen in that an embryo is a promise of pregnancy not an actual pregnancy,” said Attorney Goff.  “The ruling should be appealed and overturned so as not to limit a family’s ability to conceive and reproduce.  This is not a woman issue — it’s a family issue.”

When asked if she has any concerns about her female employees becoming mothers and its residual impact on her firm’s bottom line due to them being out of the office for sick days, Attorney Goff notes that she prefers hiring working mothers because they do the same amount of work in eight hours that others often do in twelve since they have learned excellent time management and organization skills, patience, and compassion while raising a family — all essential traits in operating a legal business. Goff Law Group is currently the largest women-owned and operated personal injury law firm in the state and is predominately made up of a female staff.

“Everyone has their own parenting journey and I want to open all of the doors for my employees to select one that universally meets their medical history, sexual preference and financial situation,” concludes Attorney Goff.  “Doing my part to give my employees hope and direction in creating a family is something I take very seriously — and so should everyone else.”

About Attorney Brooke Goff

Attorney Brooke Goff is the founder and president of Goff Law Group, the largest woman-owned and operated personal injury law firm in Connecticut, comprised of 12 experienced female attorneys with various litigation backgrounds and skillsets. The firm’s foundation is built on its aggressive, no-nonsense tactics, free consultations, direct attorney access and a 99% resolution result rate.  Arguably the most public openly female gay lawyer in the region, Attorney Goff has been named one of the Top 10 Most Influential People in Legal Services for 2024 and has earned the Super Lawyer Rising Star Award for the past seven years. Environmental documentary ‘Wild Coast Warriors,’ about a legal battle against Shell in South Africa, picked up by Limonero

Limonero Films has picked up world rights to distribute environmental documentary, “Wild Coast Warriors,” which launches at Mipdoc.

The film aims to raise awareness of the plight of small coastal communities on South Africa’s Wild Coast, who are standing up to the oil and gas industry.

It follows a David vs. Goliath court-case against Shell, which halted oil and gas exploration, winning protection for the community, the ocean and the local culture.

“Wild Coast Warriors” is directed by Nick Chevallier and Leigh Wood, who also edits the film. It is produced by Chevallier for Contemporary Film Productions. The cinematographer is Warren Smart, who was part of the camera crew on Oscar winner “My Octopus Teacher.”

Pippa Ehrlich, director of “My Octopus Teacher,” said “Wild Coast Warriors” was “a critical story about the power of community advocacy, and a warning to big corporations that there is strength in the voices of vulnerable people who are connected to and dependent on their land.”

She said the film was “an empowering case-study showing how South Africa’s constitution protects its people.” She added: “It is exquisitely shot and paints a beautiful portrait of the people working to defend their communities and the land they love.”

The film is supported by Greenpeace Africa, Natural Justice and Oxfam Intl.

Chevallier’s credits include “Blood Lions.” His clients have included BBC, Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Animal Planet and South African broadcasters.

Twenty years ago, Chevallier produced a documentary called “The Wild Coast….a Fragile Paradise” in which he explored the natural beauty and rich natural resource base of the Wild Coast.

Mipdoc runs April 6-7 in Cannes, ahead of the MipTV market and conference.

Takeoff’s mother fights for her son in lawsuit against Houston bowling alley

The owners of 810 Billiards & Bowling continue to fight the wrongful death lawsuit for Takeoff’s fatal shooting, blaming attendees, including the rapper.

Source: Variety/Getty

Nearly a year ago, Takeoff’s mother Titania Davenport filed the million dollar lawsuit. The case comes after her son was murdered outside of the bowling alley in November 2022. According to the Los Angeles Times, Davenport alleges that the Houston bowling alley was informed of the Migo’s arrival and that the venue should seek more security measures.

The lawsuit against the bowling alley was filed in June 2023, but no settlements have been reached. 810 Billiards & Bowling has requested that the lawsuit be dismissed. They denied any wrongdoing in Takeoff’s, real name Kirshnik Ball, death.

A post shared by QuavoHuncho (@quavohuncho)

According to RadarOnline, the venue places all the blame on Patrick Clark, who was charged with the murder in December 2022. Possession of illegal firearms was also cited as part of the responsibility.

Blame was also placed on Takeoff, Quavo, and others who participated in gambling activities outside of the bowling alley.

Davenport is adamant that Takeoff was an innocent bystander and that 810 Billiards & Bowling should take responsibility. In the lawsuit, she stated that the venue was aware that large crowds would attend due to the presence of celebrities. She believes that they disregarded the possibility of improving the security measures.

The grieving mother also claims that a group of patrons attempted to intimidate Takeoff. This resulted in verbal and physical altercations. This then led to gunshots that would claim Takeoff’s life. Davenport is requesting more than $1 million dollars to cover emotional damage, funeral expenses, and Takeoff’s personal injuries.

Takeoff’s father joins mother in lawsuit against bowling alley

Kenneth Ball, Takeoff’s father, and Davenport have been in a legal battle over Takeoff’s estate, as the rapper did not leave a will. RapUp reports that Takeoff left behind at least $26 million. Still, Ball has been named an Intervenor in Davenport’s lawsuit against the bowling alley. AllHipHop reported that Ball is also seeking $1 million dollars in damages as Ball has suffered greatly due to his son’s death.

Source: Penske Media/Getty

Additionally, Quavo’s assistant, Joshua Washington, filed a lawsuit against 810 Billiards & Bowling in August 2023. Washington was injured in the same shooting that abruptly ended Takeoff’s life. According to RapUp, Washington was shot in his right side, and in the rush to flee, he had to find his own way to the hospital. He also claims that security was inadequate and personnel was not properly trained.

Patrick Clark remains on house arrest

After Takeoff’s untimely death on Nov. 1, 2022, law enforcement began investigating the crime. The Los Angeles Times reported that detectives utilized video, audio, and physical evidence that marked Patrick Clark as the perpetrator.

On Dec. 1, 2022, Clark was apprehended and charged with Takeoff’s murder. He was held on a $1 million bond, which he posted. As a condition of his bail, Clark must remain on house arrest until his next court date in August 2024. The case is predicted to go to trial.

Over a year later, Takeoff’s presence continues to be missed. As one-third of the Migos, he will always be remembered and cemented as a legend.

PACAW aims to transform the mindset of future African leaders

CUMBERLAND, Md. — The monumental problems impacting the young, neglected populations in the world’s poorest countries will, sooner or later, reach everybody’s borders, posits Dr. Sylvanus Ayeni, a retired neurosurgeon who is also the president and founder of Pan Africa Children Advocacy Watch (PACAW), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Maryland.

“We live in a very complex, unsettling and troubled world, which is shrinking — distance wise — faster than we can imagine,” Ayeni said.

Ayeni founded PACAW in 2007 in response to the devastating deficits in education, infrastructure and healthcare facing African nations, predominantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. PACAW’s primary mission is to nurture and develop a new generation of African leaders who will use the continent’s abundant natural resources to provide a much needed better life for the citizens. PACAW does this by providing access to quality education at public primary and secondary schools, and community development activities.

“The main purpose is to get Nigerian youths to think differently about who they are, their innate capabilities and ultimate responsibility to their nation,” Ayeni said. “Furthermore, to get them to develop a ‘Can Do’ mindset instead of constantly waiting for foreign aid from Europe, the United States, Canada and Asia. Also, to embrace the spirit of selflessness, incorruptibility and nation building.”

PACAW is currently seeking funding to build science laboratories in public high schools run by the state and local governments, an issue that is very close to Ayeni’s heart.

“Many of these schools, sadly, have been totally neglected by the leaders,” he added.

In the 2024 school year, which beings in September, PACAW, in collaboration with Olise Omolu Foundation (https://oliseomolu.com), will launch an annual multi-state high school essay competition in Nigeria for senior high school students. The goal of this project is to re-orient and guide Nigeria’s youths — the nation’s future — toward a mindset of selflessness, service, incorruptibility and ethical thinking. Support for this endeavor will be greatly appreciated.

“The world would be different — hopefully better — if we realize that there is only one human race, a well-established scientific fact which unfortunately has been ignored for decades,” Ayeni said.

To learn more about PACAW or to make a contribution, please visit https://www.pacaw.org.

About Sylvanus Ayeni

Sylvanus Ayeni was born and raised in Nigeria and graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria. As a neurosurgeon, he worked in the private sector, for the U.S. Navy and in academia. Now retired from medicine, he is the president and founder of PACAW. He is also the author of Rescue Thyself: Change In Sub-Saharan Africa Must Come From Within (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers), in which he offers a bold dialogue about the necessity of finding alternative pathways to solve the monumental problems facing the nations of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Protestors disrupt Jill Biden Human Rights Campaign keynote address for Gaza to ceasefire

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Gala in Los Angeles hit a snafu on Saturday when protestors of the Israel-Hamas war interrupted Jill Biden’s keynote address at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles.

Just as the first lady started speaking, about five people rose from their seats and began shouting, “Free Palestine.” One held a sign that said, “Queer Jews Say Ceasefire Now.”

The evening serves as a major fundraiser for HRC, one of the country’s leading LGBTQ advocacy organizations.

They protestors continued yelling as security ushered them out of the room.

Biden stopped speaking and resumed when the protestors were out of the ballroom.

It was announced earlier this week that Biden would be delivering the keynote remarks during the dinner and awards ceremony.

Earlier in the night, protestors blocked the driveway leading to the hotel’s front entrance on Avenue of the Stars. At one point, some could be heard shouting, “Genocide Joe!”

The evening’s program also includes awards being presented to Jean Smart “(Hacks)” and Sterling K. Brown “(American Fiction).”

A similar protest – with celebrities including Sara Ramirez (And Just Like That).” and Indya Moore “(Pose)” in attendance — was held at HRC’s New York City gala in February. Activists denounced HRC’s ties to weapons manufacturer Northrop Grumman and called on the LGBTQ group to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

Just days after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, HRC president Kelley Robinson issued a statement regarding the ongoing violence in the Middle East. “The toll on both Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives rises daily. And many in the United States who are Jewish and Muslim recognize that hate-motivated bias and violence will rise here. Antisemitism is wrong. Islamophobia is wrong. Full stop,” the statement said, in part.

“[M]any members of our community feel very broken right now. The world is heavy and frightening. And the future is uncertain. This violence is a reminder that the struggle for liberation against extremism, discrimination, and hate is a global struggle. It’s my struggle. It’s your struggle. It’s our struggle.”

Earlier this month, protestors calling for a ceasefire in Gaza also disrupted the Oscars by blocking streets leading to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. With the A-list crowd scrambling to get into their seats in time, producers delayed the start of the Academy Awards by about five minutes.

Learn how to overrule negative thoughts with impactful ‘flipology’ method from life coach

SUGAR LAND, Texas — Is the key to happiness simply the ability to think about the world differently? Life coach, author and speaker Rob Cross suggests, “It’s not about what happens to you but what happens in you.”

“We’re all just stuck in a rut because of what we make things mean in our minds,” Cross said in a recent interview. “Your thinking is where it all starts. Flipping your thinking changes your life.”

In his transformational book Flip Your Thinking: To Ignite Your World, Cross shares the refreshingly simple yet radical approach to life he calls “flipology” to challenge readers to question their perspectives on 36 widely held assumptions that prevent people from having the lives they deserve.

“Your mind is so powerful that it not only shapes your perception of things, but it also convinces you that it’s the truth,” Cross said. “That becomes your reality. You alone determine what you make things mean.”

Cross’ quirky and relatable “flips” — My choice to forgive you sets ME free, not you; Love stays when I let it leave and leaves when I make it stay; To be heard I need to talk less — will have readers wondering if they’ve been viewing life backward and upside-down all along.

“I’m going to invite you to FLIP IT!” Cross quipped. “On the other side, you’ll have more love, more peace, and more business than you can shake a stick at!”

From how people define professional success to how they approach personal relationships, readers will discover that their circumstances today are outward displays of their inward thoughts and beliefs. So if life isn’t going according to plan, a crash course in flipology might be in order.

“It’s time to assign new meanings,” Cross said. “Garner the power of your thoughts. Real and lasting change starts by flipping your thinking before engaging your feet! If not, you’ll simply keep running in circles.”

A powerful “how to do life” read, Flip Your Thinking is packed with everyday fresh perspectives divided into four key categories: Flip What You Make Things Mean; Flip Your Approach to Life; Flip Your Choices; and Flip Your Destiny.

“I challenge you to approach this book as if you really don’t know everything you think you know,” Cross added. “Be open and curious. Be willing to question how you’ve been looking at things and how you’ve defined things. If you don’t like what you see in life, stand up and change your view. Gaining a new perspective can literally save your life. Happy flipping!”
