Dilemma: Cultural appropriation or celebration?

The longtime phenomenon of cultural appropriation presents a fine line between borrowing and stealing the cultural likeness from distinct groups of people, especially from minorities in the United States.

However, American culture is diverse and multicultural, so how do we avoid cultural appropriation?

Indian headdress

Almost everyone is proud to say he or she has friends that were not born in the U.S. We preach unity and acceptance in this country. So, why are folks offended when the majority culture or celebrities try to assimilate or accept an ethnic culture by mimicking or celebrating their fashion or ideas?

We see cultural appropriateness when we wear certain headgears, clothing or hairstyles, such as braids and dreadlocks that did not originate in the assimilating culture.

Dreadlocks

Especially at Halloween, Americans borrow the fashion styles of other groups of people. It is usually amazing to see who or what celebrities dress-up like on this day. But also, every day we borrow each other’s styles and likeness.

Cultural appropriation is a problem because the people we are borrowing from want credit and want you to seek their permission first.

So, this is no different from plagiarism in schools. It is expected that before or when you borrow, you make it clear who should be given credit. If we do this, then cultural appropriation should be less of a factor in Hollywood or in everyday culture.

Thinking about freelancing? Consider this

Art All Night Trenton 2017 art exhibit.

Today, millions of American artists are doing freelance work, and the business of freelance writing is filled with endless possibilities, opportunities and freedom.

One of the biggest advantages of freelance writing is that it takes almost nothing to start. The same is true for an artist. For either of them, it costs almost nothing to begin their journey.

Shelly Larson shares findings of a research in her article about freelance writing that is growing tremendously with more than 53 million Americans doing it.

Freelancing is an escape dream for many who do not want constraints on themselves, their work, or their time. It allows dreamers to escape into their dream world, and none does it better than the artist.
Artists crave freedom and creativity to showcase their talent and hard work to the world. They want to evoke emotions in others that give them abundant joy.

Although there are many aspirants to these artistic fields, only few make the leap. We can refer to the adage: There are two sides to the same coin. That is, freelancing has pros and cons.

There is a huge growth in demand for artists and freelance writers, owing to the Internet revolution and self-publishing sites like YouTube and Facebook.

As a freelance writer or artist, you do not have to worry about where to go to work. A freelance writer can work from almost anywhere in the world, with reasonable Internet connection. Artists do not have to worry either, because art is appreciated everywhere.

Artists are their own bosses and do not have to work for anyone except the vision of their art. Art is beautiful to the artist, and the idea of provoking emotions in others simply by your work of art is very intriguing.

However, on the flipside of the coin, freelance writers and artists have inconsistent income. Their hands can be so full sometimes that they might just have to turn down a few things. At other times, they are trying to find water in a desert.

Low income is a very high possibility for artists and freelance writers due to a lack of skill in lead acquisition. Although freelance writers and artists have freedoms that regular jobs do not have, they do not have the health benefits that most regular jobs offer.

Kristin Rymoen Ellstrom shares in her article that being an artist can be lonely. After all, she finds that most of the creative fields are solitary.

Whatever freelance field you choose, whether it is freelance writing or the path of an artist, you should consider the pros and the cons mentioned here.

Pluses, perils of social media

Today’s society is one that involves lightning fast communications, an overwhelming presence of the Internet, and social media platforms that affect everyday life all over the world.

No longer do you have to wait days for a letter to arrive in the mail, or speak to your friends over the phone in order to catch up. The Internet and social media now allow for people to send emails anywhere, reach out to friends that are thousands of miles away, and more.

There are several positive aspects of social media. However, social media has negative consequences if not appropriately balanced.

Individuals are fascinated with social media, but struggle to find a balance when using the different aspects of the media that have taken over everyday lives.

One of the perks of social media also brings to light a negative consequence. With the ability to see what your friends, families, and followers are doing instantly you become attached and feel included. This introduces a false sense of connection that can actually be socially detrimental depending on how a person handles it. Social media should be used to enhance your connections with people, but by solely relying on it, you can quickly acquire a false sense of friendship and interaction.

Brian Jung writes about The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals, where he discusses the delusions that are created by social media platforms. He poses a strong argument in pointing out that the relationships reliant on social media are often fake and that social media often times make it difficult for a person to differentiate genuine and hollow relationships

Ali Kingston Mwila also conveyed the positives and negatives of social media. He talks directly about how social media sites can be used effectively to build business relationships and also allow businesses to interact directly with their customers.

Mwila writes the Positive and Negative Effects of Social Media on Society, and the article is a reference point for those wanting to research the influences of social media as the platforms continue to grow.

Both sides of this argument are important when considering how to balance your personal experiences with social media.

Writer, Damon Beres published 5 Weird Negative Effects of Social Media on Your Brain, which studies how social media can affect your buying habits, appetite, and opinions on many topics.

His article emphasizes the importance of consuming media with caution because free- thinking and being true to one’s self are very important. Beres is aware that the huge influence of social media can affect self-esteems, opinions, and more, in the same way that various news outlets can sway the angle of a story in order to portray a way of thinking.

Technology and social media are amazing and can be implemented in everyday life. They have tons of benefits, like faster communication, creating friendships, enhancing businesses, and more. However, always be cautious in the ways that you allow social media to influence your thinking. Being an independent and confident thinker is much more important than how many followers you have online.

Google Cultural Institute recently launched their Art Camera technology for artists and educators.

Imagine being a student in a remote location who is fascinated by art, wanting to learn as much as you can about art, looking at photos of works of art on your computer, realizing the virtual experience is changing dramatically, and globally with Google technology.

Recently, Google announced through its Cultural Institute that it is teaming up with museums to offer the possibility of a detailed view of works of art online. This will be done with the launch of their art camera.

The quality of the images provided through the art camera is so high, that Google is saying that it is an experience only matched by “walking up to the real thing with a magnifying glass.”

The robotic technology of the camera creates giga pixel images by taking multiple close-up shots and piecing them together. Google Cultural Institute has already digitized 1000 pieces.

This is what dreams are made of for thousands of people. The speed at which technology is moving can move ideas in somewhat unexpected ways.

This technology is a great example of how this art can aid education, as it may be used by schools or individuals all around the world interested in expanding their cultural knowledge beyond the regular means.

And the viewing of the individual objects in a collection can be manupilated very efficiently by a Google virtual tour of the museum as a whole, which makes this a fascinating set of tools for art education.

America’s Got Talent hits new level of competition

Video source: NBC.com

With an interesting addition to the judge’s panel, the new season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent is promising to be one of the most competitive so far.

Maybe it’s Simon Cowell’s new paternity, but some people are saying that the “bad cop” of talent show panels is giving more standing ovations and using some softer approaches for his feedback.

The judge we love to hate seems to have changed. And it’s not necessarily a bad thing if it’s inspiring judges to appear more human and give us that golden-buzzer moment we all hope to experience. Everybody loves a golden story.

It looks like every year the bar is raised a bit more, and acts need to appeal to their creativity to really stand out among literally thousands of hopefuls

So the dancing gets edgier, the singers are younger and more prepared, the magic gets more shocking, and we as an audience are getting more demanding. The expectations are high. And the auditions have not disappointed this season.

Last week, one of the highlights of the show was 12-year-old Grace VanderWaal, who wowed audience and judges alike with her voice, when she interpreted an original song called “I don’t know my name” in front of the biggest audience she had faced so far. Her mature and charming voice accompanied by her playing the ukulele, together with lyrics wise beyond her years, earned her a standing ovation.

It’s not common to see a singer-songwriter this young and so impressive. Simon Cowell stood up with a telling smile, that we have seen whenever he finds someone this special.

Howie Mandel called the young lady, “A beautiful, walking miracle,” while the audience cheered and Grace could not contain her excitement.

Mandel then proceeded to press that golden buzzer after his speech, sending the girl straight to the live shows. He even went onstage to hug Grace.

Her family backstage expressed their happiness with tears of joy

During the height of the celebration, Simon Cowell said he predicts this girl is going to be “the next Taylor Swift.”

Grace has already gotten the attention of the media and was even interviewed by Rolling Stone.

With this season’s variety of quality artists, we can be sure to witness many memorable moments, and see true talent.

Democrats brace for nomination in NJ primaries

Hillary Clinton - Tribute

New Jersey’s presidential primaries have been taking place today, but it still remains to be seen if results of the primaries will have a bearing on the presidential race.

Polls opened at 6:00 A.M. and voters have 14 hours to cast votes for their preferred candidates for the November election.

According to a count conducted by the Associated Press, Democrat, Hillary Clinton has already drawn sufficient support from number of delegates to secure her party’s nomination. However, despite Clinton’s ascendancy becoming more and more obvious with each passing day, Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders has pressed on and has kept urging voters to show their support for his rhetoric.

Front-running Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on the other hand, has already received the required number of delegate backing that is required to clinch nomination.

Voters in New Jersey have choices for US House, county and local races.

According to Douglas Perry of The Oregon Live, the race will be a tight contest in California but expects New Jersey to go for Clinton.

Sanders is already lagging behind Clinton in the delegate hunt by a great amount and with little or no time left on the clock. It is clear that the former Secretary of State will get the nomination her camp has been so confident about in recent weeks. With a sizeable pledged-delegate lead and potential unpledged superdelegates on her side, one has to wonder how Sanders is going to cut down such a huge advantage his adversary is enjoying right now.

However, in theory, all is not lost for the Sanders camp. If the Vermont senator is able to secure wins in California, Montano and North Dakota, he will enjoy a considerable momentum and will also put pressure on Clinton.

As it looks now, Hillary Clinton has 1,812 pledged delegates while Sanders has 1,525 which means that Clinton heads into today’s polls boasting a huge lead in pledged delegates. With the way things have panned out in the last few hours, it will be hard for Sanders to overcome Clinton’s existing pledged delegates unless he goes on to secure what now appears to be unlikely landslide victories tonight.

Advocacy groups: Legalize it! Tons of benefits

Recently, a group of more than 50 physicians called Doctors for Cannabis Regulation (DFCR) announced their presence and their purpose, endorsing marijuana for adult recreational use and public health benefits.

DFCR offers a break from the American Medical Association (AMA) stance on medical marijuana. Even though the AMA is the largest membership of doctors in the country, the smaller group, DFCR, is making an argument that legalizing marijuana does more good than harm.

Here, holding a sign in front of the White House on April 2, Charles Schatz of Bel Air, Md., joins dozens of demonstrators, demanding the use of marijuana for medical cases.

According to Christopher Ingraham in the Washington Post article, the DFCR cites “hundreds of thousands of annual marijuana arrests, racial and economic disparities in marijuana enforcement, and the role of prohibition in keeping marijuana prices high and lucrative to violent drug dealers…”

Ingraham notes that the physicians believe that allowing the legalization of marijuana and regulating it is the best way to avoid criminalization from illicit drug trade, to ensure public safety, and to combat the negative consequences of strict enforcement polices in certain disadvantaged communities.

At the federal level, the Senate Appropriations Committee also recently passed an amendment allowing doctors at the Veterans Health Administration, (VA), to use marijuana or cannabis to treat certain illnesses such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their patients.

The drug is known to be beneficial for a wide array of illnesses such as pain, mental health issues, eyesight, seizures, respiratory illnesses, and even certain immune disorders.

However, there are some who oppose the use of the drug because of its addictive nature.

‘”You don’t have to be pro-marijuana to be opposed to it’s prohibition,”‘ said the founder and board president of DFCR, David L. Nathan.

Nathan addressed the facts that nine percent of adults who use the drug become dependent on it and that heavy uses in adolescents can damage the development of their brains.

Nevertheless, according to researchers, this drug is known to be less harmful to individuals and society than other legal common drugs such as alcohol and tobacco.
